Does anyone know of a program that will get rid of unwanted copied files, I have a sqm file on my comp and everytime I try to delete it it copies itself, I have tried most apps to get rid of it, but now there are 900+ files, it only copies itself when I try to delete it, all suggestions appreciated
3 June, 2007 at 9:54 am #272391That sounds nasty. Can you tell us what the file is called and what the file extension is (i.e. does it end in ”.exe” for example)? knowing this may assist in identifying what it is and how it does its thing.
My first guess is that the file contains a ”Macro” that auto replicates itself when it is activated by a delete command.
3 June, 2007 at 10:45 am #272392It appears that Windows Live Messenger is the culprit here
I read this and had to do a bit of research as this was a new one on me, I also had some SQM files on my ‘putor but hadn’t noticed them, I haven’t used WML since installing it, I ran option one it apparently worked
SQM files are associated with Windows Messenger Live. I believe them to be ‘logs’ of the chats sessions, but I could be wrong!
So here is what you can do, you have two options:
Option One
If you want to keep Windows Messenger Live,
Reboot your computer into ‘SAFE’ mode (hit F8 immediately after you turn the computer back on, nb; full shutdown please not a restart or windows will not boot into safe mode!) . Make sure you are logged in as the ‘Administrator’.
Go back to the directory where you found the SQM files and delete them, they should delete this time.
If you get an error message ignore it, thats MS complaining and restart in normal mode…Option numero duo
If you are unsuccessful in deleting the files in SAFE mode, you have to first uninstall Windows Messenger Live and then follow ‘Option One’ to delete the files.NB, if you reinstall WML, the SQM files will return
‘SQM’ stands for ‘Software Quality Manager’ – and they come from Microsoft, they are also used to report stuff back to MS nice…… !

I suspect that Druid has the answer to your issue Waring, and you should follow his advice for removing these nuisance files.
Your Norton anti-virus application won’t detect these files as they don’t operate in the way a virus does and in any event it isn’t designed to look for this sort of activity.
A macro is a sort of little programme or procedure that is recorded , saved, and embedded within for example an Excel spreadsheet or a Word document. When you ”run” the macro it performs the actions that you have previously recorded for it. This might be running or inserting particular formulas in a spreadsheet or running some pre-determined type in a Word document. The ‘bad guys’ sometimes use this facility to ”run” stuff on your computer without your knowledge or consent and which may damage or delete files etc etc.
