Bearing in mind the amount of people who have died in order to secure our
right to vote. What are your views regarding compuilsory voting?1 May, 2006 at 1:32 am #212424I support everyone’s ‘right to choose’
I vote – but don’t blame anyone who doesn’t, it’s difficult to know which pack of lies to vote for

1 May, 2006 at 10:15 am #212426I think it should be down to whether you want to vote or not.You cant make ppl vote if they dont believe any of the parties and have no faith in them as my Hubby doesnt. He never votes. So no it should be about choice.
1 May, 2006 at 10:41 am #212427If you don’t vote then you can hardly complain about who does get elected. In recent General Elections and more so in the local ones, the non-voters are the majority. Is it just apathy or are people in the main content with their lot?
1 May, 2006 at 10:45 am #212428Have to agree Obs, I have always voted even one there isnt a party which exactly fits my views.
If you don’t vote, don’t complain about what goes on- simple really
1 May, 2006 at 2:27 pm #212429I think everyone should have to vote, even if they have a box which states ‘I vote for myself cos they are all coonts’. An individual’s vote should not be anonymous (don’t think it is btw) and in my view, people’s political allegiance should be clearly identifiable, possibly by making them paint their front door a certain colour or have different colour hats and umbrellas..
People under 21 should have the value of their vote abated by 50% unless they have studied business studies or politics (preferably in a school in the top 100 list). People over 75 should not be allowed to vote cos they will vote for any party which gives them free tv licences and rusks.
I think all politicians should be allowed to serve a maximum of two consecutive terms in parliament then they should have to go and do community service or something for the next four years. MPs should also be subject to a ‘three shags and out’ rule so that we can get rid of that fat tub of lard and others like Boris Johnson.
Ok maybe the bit about the over 75’s above was a bit tongue-in-cheek but I seriously can’t understand why we insist on countries we think are a bunch of coonts who need to start running things properly (like Northern Ireland, Iraq and Afghanistan or any country that wants loans) forming new governments under proportional representation, yet we don’t insist on proportional representation in this country. Is it simply because the fat tubs of lard will lose their perks and their pensions or is there more to it than that?
1 May, 2006 at 3:48 pm #212430I believe voting should be compulsory, with the option to tick the abstain box.
Voting should be made easier via electronic polling booths at supermarkets,
libraries etc.
As was previously stated; if you don’t vote, stop complaining!1 May, 2006 at 4:00 pm #212431I believe that under the current proposals being put forward for compulsory voting, there would be a ‘None of the above’ choice for those not wishing to vote for a particular party.
As for votes not being anonymous – of course they are. You have to register to vote, but the actual ballot is anonymous. Therefore whilst ‘the authorities’ will know you turned up to vote, they have no way of knowing what box you ticked as the ballot papers are anonymous (as far as I am aware).
1 May, 2006 at 4:31 pm #212432I really can’t see what the issue is with voting – or simply attending a polling station and ‘registering your presence’.
It is a huge problem with democracy that people entitled to vote simply cannot be bothered to attend. There can not be many physical reasons for this. The housebound (for whatever reason), the absent (again for whatever reason) all can have postal votes.
Polling stations are all located within a reasonable distance from voter’s homes.
I think that there should be a legal compulsion to attend and vote. So what if some bloody minded voters place their X against a protest party – they are entitled to vote for whomsoever they please.
The only exceptions should be for grossly fat maggot ridden females who are stuck to their armchairs.
