Having been to Cape Town, Australia and America I know that we pay double what they pay (incl. at Starbucks, where the ingredients are the same) and the food is generally not as good or as much .. . but do we complain?
Scenario (true story) . . you order a lamb curry, all you get is 3 small pieces of meat . . . do you:-
(a) wave the waiter over and refuse to accept demanding considerably more or a full refund
(b) eat it but mention it politely when you pay
(c) say nothing for fear of being seen as greedy or a problem-person
Do you have any experience or do you hardly ever go to restaurants, or are they always good – if so, where do you go?
11 May, 2008 at 11:58 pm #335318I find pubs that rely on passing-trade the worst.
Especially on bank holiday weekends where they can always blame staff or ingredient shortage . . . and of course those horrible coke-dispensers water it down.
Last time I bought a pint of orange-juice and lemonade from a pub (18 months ago) it was £2.70.
I questioned this, they said they had to use 2 small bottles of j2o, the liquid was nearly room temperature so the only way of cooling it was to drink some and add ice, furyther watering it down.It was such a hot day and I was miles from anywhere so they had me over a barrel.
12 May, 2008 at 12:12 am #335319Knowing people who have worked in fast food places, and other places where food is served. It’s generally a good idea that if you are going to complain, don’t eat anything else if they offer as you may get more “extra” ingredients than you bargained for!
Personally if the food is that bad, I would not eat it and leave it and refuse to pay and never go back. Or just leave it, pay and never go back. I’ve done both of them at different times.
I guess it depends what the problem is, I’ve been lucky and never found anything that should not be in my food. But i have been with people and they found a dark curly hair, and my sister once found a piece of glass in her curry! These places (take aways) refunded the money and offered replacement food, but would you really wanna eat from there again?… I know I could not.
12 May, 2008 at 12:36 am #335320well after working in and managing in the catering industry for 18 years pleased to say i dont anymore i have to say lol i rarely complain tbh unless it is really bad, simply because i know how hard it can be especially if you are tied to portion controls and many other controls etc, as for foreign bodies in food, again it may be the fault of the restaurant or the fault of the supplier and should be bought up so it can be investigated but there is a correct way to go abt it, i hate the ignorant wont listen árseholes who start loudly shouting so everyone in a 5 mile radius can hear and acting like u did it on purpose, now they are the ones i suggest dont have a replacement lol not that i’d ever do anything untoward u understand lol.
But yes a quiet word in a mannerly way will almost always be treated with the respect it deserves and the management do want to know when these things happen if you dont tell them they cant put it right for you and future customers.
So in answer A but careful with the demanding bit if asked nicely u have more chance of getting what u want unspoiled and , or say thank you but am not satisfied with the portion and they can remove it uneaten and have a refund, any customer that ate more than half a meal then complained abt size or taste would not get a refund off me if they managed that much of it they are taking the pi ss. -
