You don’t think internment was a dilution of liberty?
15 May, 2008 at 11:19 pm #333904Is that directed at me? I absolutely agree it was a dilution, and it was done by a Tory government, and also relinquished due to it’s failure. Can you see any government relinquishing the New Labour state acts that give them so much power now? Internment was positively diluted compared to the acts that have been passed in the past decade. I don’t defend either parties, but our rights are being forever squeezed.
15 May, 2008 at 11:47 pm #333905There is always that temptation for any government, I’d agree. It’s almost a force of nature, the natural order of things. It certainly wasn’t the Tory’s only shot at it, either. Remember the farce of noctovisual companies forced to use actors’ voices to dub over Irish politicians words? From around the world we could mention the cruel authoritarianism of a thousand governments.
It must be the Briton’s role, surely, in appreciation of his history and tradition, to remain steadfast in the defence of his liberty. Guard against his own government’s excesses. It’s a long struggle amongst our people. Isn’t it what Magna Carta was about? Isn’t it what the Civil War was about? Even the American Revolution started as a defence of the natural rights of men as Britons.
I reckon we, as a generation of subjects, have failed to safeguard our liberties thus far. We make barely any fuss except when we are whipped up by the Daily Mail brigade and demand even more of our liberty is taken away. The government are acting perfectly normally. They wouldn’t be able to get away with it if the population weren’t such a cowed, lazy, materialistic mess. It is us, the people, who are amiss in our responsibilities. We’re more interested in Big Brother controversy these days, aren’t we?

You know, far from the days of old when we used to just talk shit to one another… basically what you are saying in your vernacular way is that us Brits, and more so English, are just far to passive, I believe. We allow ourselves to be pushed over, yet we vote in another government that does exactly the same as the previous one, without so much as a wimper.
The Welsh, N.Irish and Scots get devolution and a governing body that can also vote in Westminster for the English. The English have no vote on those countries and principalities. The English tend to say ‘oh well’ and get on with it, yet we seeth inside. There is no real uprising culture in the country of England, much to the opposite of centuries past. If there was I believe the map of the United Kingdom would change, as the English said ‘no more’ to funding other countries.
It is our faults, I don’t believe it has anything to do with getting off our fat, lazy derriere’s, but everything to do with our passiveness and willingness to do what is right by others… a contradiction in terms, I know.
16 May, 2008 at 12:11 am #333907I’d say that seething complicity is a fairly recent thing. Our grandparents’ general strike was very nearly a revolution and certainly made the government take notice. Before them, our people had fought tooth and nail to get every right that we indifferently squander. Wat Tyler was English. Mrs Pankhurst was English. The Tolpuddle Martyrs were English. The victims of Peterloo were English.
16 May, 2008 at 12:12 am #333908And now ‘us English’ should to an extent be ashamed of ourselves for not making a point of the major issues involving English people nowadays… in my opinion.
16 May, 2008 at 12:20 am #333909Yes we are ashamed……..of you Geoff, making the wolrd think Brits are some saddo’s who harass and abuse women, get drunk and act like a moron online, and wack off on cam…yes we are very ashamed of you don’t you worry about that sonny.
