I wonder how many of you have noticed the differing styles of Christmas lighting that people put up in and around their homes, and consequently how easy it is to “Spot the Chav”???

There are two basic types of Christmas lighting installation which provides a clue as to the degree of Chaviness of the householder.

    1. Lights put up internally (sitting room typically) around the Christmas tree, maybe around a window, and so on. These lights are primarily intended to be seen and enjoyed by the family within the home and not primarily intended to be seen outside the home. This style of Christmas lighting is not Chavvy.

    2. Lights put up externally – sometimes all over the house and even on the roof. This style of lighting is most definitely Chavvy.

An exception to Type 2. lighting is the tasteful display of lights around an external tree. Single colour “LED” lights (typically blue or white) are quite stylish and not at all Chavvy. Coloured lights, heavily festooned all over trees etc, are verging on the Chavvy. If the coloured lights ‘flash’ then they ARE definitely Chavvy.

However, those who simply smother the eaves; doors; roofs; and so on with garish displays of coloured lights (particularly FLASHING coloured lights) and well into Chavvery. They make a ghastly spectacle of themselves for all to see and gawp at.

The ultimate in Chavness are those who not only go totally over the top with the flashing coloured lights, but then just HAVE to add Father Christmases – on sleighs or worse still, riding bicycles; reindeer; flashing signs saying “Merry Christmas”; dwarves & gnomes; and so on.

These are Chavvy in the extreme and can even cause traffic accidents, as passing drivers gaze with absolute horror at the tasteless and garish displays and take their eyes off the road.

So the burning question is: What style of Christmas lights do YOU have this year???

Oh and hands up all those (including me) who have been driving around the area where they live, eyeballing other people’s Christmas lights and playing “Spot the Chav”.

    Bat

I,ve got lights on my tree in the front room and round the kitchen window and thats it. We don,t have lights outside or displays outside like some people do.

Displays outside? you mean like flashing

I’m definately type 1. Decorate the tree & if outsiders can see it then all well & good.

I like to see houses decorated tastefully. A few are done to raise money for local charities which is lovely but, some can be a bit OTT.

Dunno if it’s just in my area this year but , I have noticed that alot of houses that have been lit up in past years aren’t this year ……… has the credit crunch hit here to & peeps are thinking of their electricity bills? :-k

You have a good point there Sarah, maybe the credit crunch HAs intervened.

A house around a mile from ours was unanimously voted “Charver of the year” for two years running. This was because the owner had literally covered every part of the house in strings of flasjing coloured lights as well as having some 15 or so illuminated Santas; reindeer; and an assortment of disney type characters climbing all over it.

The ultimate was an enormous illuminated Santa with several reindeer pulling his sleigh along the ridge of the roof.

This year …… nothing, absolutely nothing at all. I know that they still live there as the “Mr Whippy” ice cream van is still parked in their front garden. Bloody shame really as it afforded loads of amusement and derisory remarks from all the locals.

I only do my tree, cant be @rsed with sticking lights all over the place! I don’t stick no decorations on my ceiling either, cant be doing with it!

I just have my tree and my Santa’s and some Christmas ornaments, that’s it.

In which case Dawny, you are hereby declared to be living in a Chav free zone. Well done !
