Dunno about requirement as in the whole “clean boxers” / “decent shoes” kinda context  , but yes, certainly within the whole Catholic framework it was (and is in almost every case) very much a national / religious form of custom / tradition .. not to mention a Church Definite!
Bear with me .. it’s Ireland
My original middle name is Luke.. which kinda gained some street cred in the 70s with the whole Skywalker gig (though I would’ve much prefered Han).
My Confirmation name is one I had freedom to pick for myself.. Alexander.. coz I was reading quite a bit about the Great one at the time :P
Ps.. clean boxers and Catholicism  .. let’s NOT go there :?

10 May, 2008 at 9:49 pm #333735Yes I called my daughter the pretty girly name evie and she’s a tomboy, always has been. My pet hate is made up names though! Also my girls all sorted with names before they born, couldn’t think of a boys name til the last minute.
11 May, 2008 at 8:10 pm #333736my oldest is called ashleigh, no idea where it came from it just popped into my head! after i had her i said she was called rachel but then another midwife came into the room to check on us asked her name and i said ‘ashleigh’ no idea why but i thought to myself well she must just look like an ashleigh so it stuck. she gets ash most of the time
my boy is called lewis but i soooo want to call him liam, for weeks after he was born i wanted to change it but bf wouldnt have it. i still think he should have been liam 8 years later. we argued over names until the day he was going to be registered and i just said ‘lewis’ he said ‘yeah ok’ so we went in and registered him. he says now he wishes we’d called him liam
