I’m going to moan today about food shopping. Now its easy to moan about the price so I wont. What I am going to moan about is all this new trendy way of trying to sell us something by saying how special this product is.
What brought this to my attention today was when I was in a well known supermarket browsing the veg. I fancied some carrots and silly me thought they were long and orange and that would be the end of it, but noooo ! They now do what they describe on the packaging as “no need to peel “ carrots.
Now am I alone in this but I never peel carrots, never ever ! I just chop steam and devour. So im thinking, these are just normal carrots but are trying to be something they are not by describing themselves as “ no need to peel”. surely all carrots are ????
My second item is “hills side “lamb. Now if im not mistaken this is lamb that is free to roam the hillside. Now this freedom is costing an extra 25% on the price. Now im sorry I do not want to pay a premium on a piece of lamb just because he or she has a better view over Wales than the other sheep below them. They should pay the premium not me because they have the bloody view.18 July, 2008 at 5:30 pm #355233lol… poor chicken, now why buy welsh lambs the blacked scottish lambs nice n tasty ..
well I have started makin me own breid again, only problem is when its ready 2 seconds l8ter the kids have eaten it all while warm…!! i even put it up high i though but the 2 of them where doin a balancin act to get to it lolnow carrots just need to be top n tailed and washed i never peel them either chicken so no a daft q, as the goodness it taken away when u peel them…
18 July, 2008 at 5:30 pm #355234sounds like organic meat, its the same with free range eggs, you pay extra. As for the peeled carrots, you have to pay for the privilege because some poor sap has sat there and peeled them for ya! (..and you never peel yours?? ) you can buy ready sliced apple if you’re lazy enough to buy it! ….all at an extra cost.
18 July, 2008 at 5:32 pm #355235Peeling is more to remove any chemicals used in growing them than anything else to be honest

surely all the goodness cant be in the skin??? :? i just thought it was just hygienic to peel them.
I love the smell of fresh baked bread, bf’s mum used to cook it all the time. Didnt always taste as good as it smelt mind you, you have to get the ingredients just right otherwise it can turn out a bit weird!
18 July, 2008 at 5:38 pm #355237Pete the carrot has the chemicals all the way through if grown in chemicals.
I eat organic (allotment grown) I have skin probs and the veg irritates my skin.
I peel my carrots because they look more appetising, I make mine into carrot sticks rather than circles.
As for hill side lamb, I’d rather eat that knowing it had been eating as it should rather than pumped with shyte. 8)
I am a food snob, just the way I am 8)
18 July, 2008 at 5:40 pm #355238I meant chemicals in the soil that come in contact not systemic stuff
18 July, 2008 at 5:40 pm #355239I forgot these carrots still looked like they had the skin on t think they were just scraped.I don’t peel any veg cus thas where all the vits are. mushrooms, potatoes, carrots, the lot all go in whole. :D Its the hillside bit that got me, i dont care what part of the field it lives. what ever next postcode sheep, animals pushing the price of land up becuse they dont want to live in a Part of Wales that is less desirable  are sink estate chav sheep going to be cheaper !

Organic vegetables not pesticide-free
When it comes to banned pesticides like DDT, organic root vegetables may harbor pesticide residues as high or higher than conventional vegetables.
As a nearly $8 billion business in the U.S. alone, according to 2000 data [244KB PDF] from the U.S. Department of Agriculture, organic fruits and vegetables have moved rapidly from a fringe business at the local food co-op to a mainstream supermarket staple. A key reason consumers buy organic is to avoid pesticide residues, but a small study suggests that organic produce may not be quite as clean as shoppers expect. Banned pesticides like DDT were found in organic carrots and potatoes at levels as high as or higher than conventionally grown produce, according to a screening study conducted by a college undergraduate and presented at the Society of Toxicology and Chemistry annual meeting in November. In all the carrot samples, concentrations of these chemicals were very low, in the low parts-per-trillion (ppt) range. The chemicals concentrated in the skin of the vegetables
