Platini wants the Scottish Cup winners afforded entry into the Champions League at the expense of the league runners up (presumably he’s not going to disallow the champions entry) via a playoff. So what if the unlikely scenario comes around where, no disrespect, Ross County win the cup and pull off a shock in the playoff to get into the Champions League?

What if the league winners also win the cup, which happens often in Scotland? Scottish football is already a laughing stock, this would devalue it even further.

might get the bigger teams to take the cup more seriously

I think for every country, only the league winners should be allowed entry to the champions league, maybe pick 8 teams, one from each of the best european nation

    England
    Scotland
    Italy
    France
    Germany
    Spain
    Holland
    Portugal

then just have a standard league.. they play each other twice.. thats just 14 games, about that you play anyway

you could say that leaves nations out, but maybe the 2 nations who finished bottom each year gets relegated and another nation comes in

Like some sort of European super league? It’s a decent idea and I do go along with the idea of only league winners playing in the CL (even though I’m a Gers fan) But how would relegation work? Maybe two teams who finish bottom don’t qualify the following year and there’s a draw made to see which nations can are permitted entry in their place?

Problem there is that it would devalue the domestic competition if there was no Champions League carrot. I’d also be in favour of having an under 19 version running at the same time with the same teams, though I know many teams may not have u19 teams so it probably wouldn’t work out. I think the big teams do take the Scottish Cup seriously – it’s the CIS cup that’s viewed by many as the lesser trophy.

well it will make the uefa cup mean more if only the league winners went in the champions league, relegation is easy.. the bottom two nations get relegated, however who gets promoted is another problem, unless you run two leagues, the winner of the 2nd tier gets into next years first division of the champions league

i think the super league idea will come into play at some point, its bound to happen, just when

the champions league format of just being a knockout compitation and having teams involved who are not involved in title races each season, makes it less worthy to be named champions of europes best, it was a lot better back in the day of 1 team for each nation, its the true champions then… lots of pressure for each team though, they will be playing for the whole country

It’ll never happen. The Champions League is a Cash Cow, and it’s a far better, more glamorous competion that the old European Cup ever was.

I also think it’s fair. Finishing 3rd or 4th in England, Spain or Italy is a far harder thing to do than winning a lot of the Domestic League’s in Europe.
Of course it isnt the teams that win the lesser League’s fault that they play in the lesser League. They can only beat the Teams that are in front of them, but I think all in all the Qaulifying’s fair.

They changed the entry to the Champions League – from only being the Country’s Champions – to the 2nd 3rd 4th placed teams as well

Before that the EUFA cup was a far harder cup to win with more quality teams in it – now rubbish like Newcastle get in the back door via Inter Toto – it’s crazy
