I heard today that all 12 and 13 year old girls will be given an injection to prevent 70-80% of cervical cancers caused by HPV.
Which leads me to a simple conclusion.
The vast majority of cervical cancers are caused by
1. Numerous sexual partners
2. Starting sex at a young age
3. lack of use of safe sexAll these three factors are totally preventable yet the NHS is to pay tens of millions for the injections. So teenage girls get preventative treatment (which of course will have them safe in the knowledge they dont have to change their sexual habits, indeed it will encourage them its ok to carry on as they are) and people who suffer from diseases like Alzheimers (which is not preventable, as far as I know) are denied treatment because the drugs cost too much.
How much does we, as taxpayers, expect the NHS to assist us no matter what the consequences of our actions and how much should there be individual responsibility to change our actions to minimise the risk?
Seems barking to me
21 June, 2007 at 8:14 am #274210my Aunt died of cervial cancer, at 36 and was a virgin, as she was serverly handicapped… I was 6 at the time of her death I only rem her always being in a wheelchair so I think the 3 reasons you mentioned which are the cause sometimes arn’t always the cause Slayer….
21 June, 2007 at 11:11 am #274211That’s as may be Mary … but Slayer’s point is still very well made.
The overwhelming majority of the cases of cervical cancer (NOT all cases you note) are caused by the HPV or human papilloma virus, which is sexually transmitted.
It’s the old story again isn’t it …. one with which we are by now all too familiar. Don’t bother teaching children about morality, or sexual abstinence. Just accept that the total lack of moral leadership both in their homes and in their perception of acceptable standards of behaviour is OK really and is ‘cool’ and let them get on with fornicating with each other as soon as they can.
Oh dear …. unrestrained and unprotected fornication leads to sexually transmitted diseases – never mind we can protect them from the consequences of their actions with a simple injection – and all will be well won’t it?
There are times … and this is absolutely one of them … when I utterly dispair for our children’s future. God help us but we are creating a future of utterly immoral ‘feral’ children besotted with illicit sex, illegal drugs and ‘cool’ street culture.
21 June, 2007 at 1:56 pm #274212Kids are having sex at earlier ages now then 20 years ago. We can of course preach to them about abstinence and morality, but they will most likely fall into the peer pressure of having sex before they are mentally ready to handle it. There are no side effects of having this vaccination, so the benefits out weigh the risk. As a society, we’re not as moral as we should be. We should still encourage moral behavior as well as responsible behavior. We are responsible for our children’s health and well being. If giving the vaccination would potentially save kids from cancer, them I’m for it. I’ve seen cancer first hand and if it can be prevented by a simple stick of a needle, why not save lives and suffering by doing it? Just ask anybody who’s had cancer.

i agree with you AW, but unfortunetly some parents don’t speak with their children about sex, they leave it up to what they get at school which is pretty basic stuff, not even touching on the surface…..
I can rem my sex education at school… the science block 6.6 section 6 a diagram of the female and male body…. not much, I didnt learn anything from my parents either, as it was a no go area, if parents want to teach their children about sex education its about time they should feel less embarsed about the situtation… I know id rather be freely spoken with my children, as I wish them to understand its more than a fumble to make you feel good…

This is … yet again … a total and utter cop out. So underage girls will be girls will they??? Well never mind ‘cos at least we can stop them from getting cancer. Yes let’s all collude in this and give them a free injection.
Jesus fucking Christ ….. are you totally insane????
If the teenage unmarried girls didn’t allow some snotty nosed little street hoodlum to stuff his rancid little cock into them in the first place, they wouldn’t be worried about getting cervical cancer from the HPV virus that he squirts into them.
