This thread worries me. I’ve noticed a tendency in what we might call the Celtic nations to sometimes wallow in their own marketing. People often say that it is a failing of the English that they lack one of these myth narrative identities but I think the unwillingness to sign up for one is a strength and a credit to the nation.
My instict is that David Hume has at least as much to offer my sense of Scottishness as Ossian and, even though my family comes from the Highlands, I’m beginning to resent its Walter Scott hijack.
yer always welcome to start yer own Pikey..
and i have always resented Wattie Scott ! the jewel feef !

I would have thought that somewhere between the epic myth spinning of James Macpherson and the scepticism of Hume, we have something of a truth, although Hume himself would have argued that it is/was a shifting one.
Anyone coming to the Highlands in search of Fergus and Flora Mac-Ivor is either a fool or an American tourist, the two being not mutually exclusive. :roll:9 August, 2008 at 4:14 pm #357445@pikey wrote:
