New cannabis laws create “dual justice system”
What’s happening?
The reclassification of cannabis from Class C to Class B comes into effect today amid claims the new laws send out “mixed messages”. The government introduced tougher penalties because of concerns that strong strains of the drug, such as skunk, can cause mental health problems. Under the new ‘three strikes’ system, a warning will be followed by an £80 spot fine. Only after a third offence will people face arrest and up to five years in prison.
What are people saying?
Legal experts have warned the new penalty system is fundamentally unfair – and could even cause a surge in cannabis use. “It’s a dual justice system,” John Fassenfelt, deputy chair of the Magistrates’ Association, told the BBC. “If you smoke or take another Class B drug you’ll be brought to court, if you take cannabis you’ll be given a fine. Where’s the justice in that?”
Why should we give a damn?
The government reversed David Blunkett’s decision to downgrade cannabis because of “real public concern about the potential mental health effects of cannabis use,” despite expert advice that it should remain Class C. Although mental health charities welcomed the move, others claim it will do little to deter users. Danny Kushlick, of the drugs policy think tank Transform, said: “Nobody is going to be put off smoking cannabis by the decision to reclassify it. It’s a decision that has been taken for political reasons.”
Your thoughts?
30 January, 2009 at 10:36 am #389612er ! lets think about this…
drugs + police = government spending
cannabis + police + easy pickings fines = government gain.not rocket science is it..
they are clueless. someone needs to explain to the muppits in government that people use cannabis. people will always use cannabis because its nice, its relaxing, it kills stress and it numbs pain. it costs less than a prescription and it works with no side effects.
its a natural product with no chemicals and its non addictive. [manufactured pain killers are chemical based and are all addictive]
but lets get to the real reason they have done this u turn on cannabis. they can now tax money from the thousands of teens who buy a smoke to escape the boredom and reality of a shi*e existance thay have been dealt. the government see this drug as an easy tax and an easy headline grabber. in reality they couldnt care less, as long as the fines cover the cost of collection. why arent they hammering the coke dealers ? aaah.. tell ya why, because that would entail going into pubs/clubs and actually grabbing the dealers in situ. the polioce wont do this, because it means they have to get their hands dirty. they dont like doing that, not without riot shields and dogs. almost every town and village across britain is blighted by coke addiction, my god even international rugby players are at it..
why arent gordon andf his crones kicking pub doors in and dragging the dealers off to jail ? itll never happen because the government and the police are cowards. fine the smokers who use sensibly and leave the evil kid catchers alone, thats a problem for the next tory government god forbid.
:twisted:30 January, 2009 at 7:17 pm #389613Caught in possession 5 yr in gaol see who gets possesses then and lets not pretend it’s to escape any social evils put on us by the powers that be ffs, thats their excuse to smoke it and it’s a lie (oh and yeah i have)
30 January, 2009 at 10:13 pm #389614Hmmm, well let’s be real about this shall we. Cannabis is a drug that is smoked regularly by many peeps & for many a reason. At the end of the day it is a mind altering substance. It makes peeps do things that they wouldn’t normally do. That is a dangerous place to be & it costs lives!
My mate tried it to help cope with the effects of MS. Sadly it didn’t help & she since passed away aged 42. :(
I know a few that have the odd spliff at the weekend to unwind, each to their own. I tried it a couple of times in my younger years – (yes I know sad & gave into peer pressure). Didn’t do anything for me.
Think the real issue here like many other things in life is the effects it has on kids. They might start with the odd recreational spliff that leads on to the hard stuff. I am sick of reading the sob stories of peeps that get dragged into a downward spiral because life dealt a shyte hand & before they know where they are they are hooked on heroin etc etc & often prostituting themselves, robbing folk to pay for their habit.
Where to draw the line is a hard one to decide. An optimist might say if it has proven medical advantages then put it on prescription for those who might benefit.
For everyone else – if you get caught using it then it’s illegal but then we face the prospect of our over crowded jails being stacked full of petty criminals & the real nasty crims don’t get the long sentences they really deserve.Good subject for debate – I personally don’t condone the use of drugs of any sort for recreaction but as I have said already each to their own.
The new classification is yet another way of the government extracting money …… but then if you can afford to buy the drug , you can afford to pay the fine??? Hmm another interesting line of thought. :wink:31 January, 2009 at 4:34 pm #389615It affects people in different ways!
I like a smoke now and then. (Not an everyday habit).. Not addicted, and believe me, i was doing silly things before i started smoking it.
Probably, when the television starts talking to me, i won’t smoke it anymore. I don’t use it as a Pain Reliever, nor doesn’t make me tired. It makes me want to eat at times, brings out my creative side. I don’t mean you’ll find me spraying my tag on the walls in my area,.. (WooHoo woz ere).. Just gives me Ideas! (Good ones of course,.. and legal).. Look at what drink does to you..
IF people want to smoke it, let them.. Lawyers smoke it, police smoke it.. How’s about you PB?
31 January, 2009 at 6:09 pm #389616It causes (or at least can cause) mental problems and i read somewhere “rots” the lungs far more than cigarettes. It isnt illegal on a whim or out of spite it’s illegal for a reason, because users dont go beating people up doesnt mean its harmless and should be made legal
1 February, 2009 at 12:29 am #389617FFS………………… yeah bloody yeah blah de rffin blah… compleat effin shyte above,,,!!1 in my own ways u r all talkin logically BOOLOCKS…./

AMEN…. MJ……………… JMMOG…. x
1 February, 2009 at 8:40 am #389618But i’m not talking about using it medically MJ, if it’s that good and it works then you should be able to have it prescribed i reckon, but it’s not the miracle has no side effects drug. Sure some people try it recreationally and never go on to “harder” drugs but i dare bet an awful lot do, and the majority take it recreationally and not for pain relief.
1 February, 2009 at 11:42 pm #389619mary J? you rock gal !!!!!!!! xxxxxxxx
11 February, 2009 at 5:06 pm #389620i suffered a collapsed spine ten years ago. i had a major op toimplant a titanium rod and bone graft it into place. it gave me a new lease of life. but im left with nerve damage and its very painful at times. i smoke every night before i go to bed. it relaxesmy muscles and it enables me to break the tense pain cycle. brilliant stuff. i can now go without morphine and two sleeping pills a night. [awful] cannabis should be prescribed and sold over the counter in small doses for stress and sleep difficulty. [just not to teenage boys it tends to open the dark side in them well one in twenty thousand anyway]
