Rainy I,d recomend two things. Firstly, get rid of McAfee, it,s a load of shyte. Lets face it, if you had 10 trojans on your pc it can,t be very good can it?
Secondly, install this. It updates regularly throughout the day. I would highly recomend it.

Thanks Bat, i’ll give it a go :)

Rainy, from what you have posted, I suspect that your anti-virus / firewall just isn’t up to much …. but then the ”freebie” ones usually aren’t when it comes down to it.

The ‘Trojan’ that you mentioned might be “Windows Anti-virus 2008” which is a nasty little git, and very persistent. If you delete it, it will simply re-create itself on the next boot up.

The best bit of software that I have found to remove it (and i’ve had to do this on three friend’s computers so far) is Spyware Doctor (from PC Tools)….. BUT it won’t co-exist alongside Kaspersky (that Bat reccomends) and which I fully endorse.

A workaround might be to invest in Kaspersky Internet Security 2008 version and run that. It ought to find where the nasties are hidden and quarantine them ready for you to delete.

If you havce a problem after this – re post here and we’ll look into it for you.

I don’t think it has gone, its still on there.

It could be something dumb like Worm.Win32.Netbooster or something real nasty like Win32:Virut.

There been a few nasty new ones floating around in m sn for the last few weeks.

McAfee will not find them or clean them.

kaspersky doesn’t seem to scan instant message programs like m s n and I did have to set this up manually.

Just be careful what you download and don’t take any pic’s thru m sn again

    Bat

Rainy this is Kaspersky Internet Security 2009 version. It is a bit pricey but it,s well worth it I think.

The ‘file anti-virus’ settings in Kaspersky ought to scan all executable files looking for back door downloads. This (I think) includes IM applications like MSN and Yahoo messenger etc.

We I was dealing with a tech problem in f3 for someone else and notice that on my computer it wasn’t set up.

Did have to spent 20 mins sorting it out.

Thank you PB. Very much appreciated. Everyting seems very calm right now. I virus scan each time i boot up the computer and it doesn’t seem to be telling me i have any little nasties. Touch wood.

Bat.. i’d love to be able to afford an anti virus checker like that but it’s just not possible. This is a work computer and McAfee is what i’ve been given and is what i’m lumped with. If i want anything else the toss pots say i have to stump up for it out of my own pocket as after a year of having this computer at home “For work purposes” ;) … i have to either throw it or keep it. It will not belong to them.

The “virus” is definitely Windows AntiVirus 2008 (have a look at http://www.avira.com/en/security_news/faked_anti-virus_solution.html if you are not sure) and in itself is not a virus, but a very nasty bit of AdWare that downloads some very nasty things to your comp, the 1st case I came across had downloaded (amongst other things) a worm which destroyed the operating system, and in yet another case had downloaded (a) a keylogger which records every key stroke you make and then sends the information back to a remote comp, i.e. bank details, passwords etc, in all cases so far I have not fixed a comp with less than 100 “viruses” etc on them. This “nasty” is easily picked up from P2P sites like LimeWire etc because too many people do not have adequate protection.
How to get rid of it
One of the easiest ways is to go to http://www.trendsecure.com/portal/en-US/tools/security_tools/housecall and run the free online scan, this will get rid of any “viruses” etc.
Next download the best antivirus I have found
    ( http://www.avira.com/en/pages/index.php)
it will only cost £26.95 (39.95 euros) and is a complete security suite in that it fully protects your comp ( if you cant afford the full version at least download the free version)
If you do go with Avira make sure you uninstall any other antivirus
Next download a peice of software called CCleaner http://www.filehippo.com/download_ccleaner/ it’s free and will keep your computer running smoothly by removing up any hidden crap in your temp files, cache, etc

    Hope this helps

PS get rid of LimeWire etc if I had my way I would have all P2P sites closed down this is how 99% of all “viruses” spread,

I couldn’t agree with you more alfieboy. They’re a menace.
