Thing is …. if the Government is so set against smoking, then all they have to do is to make it illegal to sell tobacco in all its forms …. and lose the billions in revenue that they take every year from smokers.

They could even deduct this lost revenues from the sale of tobacco products from the NHS budget.

After all, if smokers were forced to quit like this, they would all be much more healthy (allegedly) and the NHS would have less work to do and therefore need less money.

they aren goin to do that tho are they. because the tax revnue form cigarettes is equal to the whole of he nhs budget and a third of the defence budget. what next tax bullets the same rate as fags???
i dont know about anywhere else but here in yorkshire no one buys fags form shops anymore, we all buy them from wagon drivers and people who go abroad. i haver a friend who spends his whole week travelling to prague and spain just buying fags to sell on. he has been stopped twice but the profits make it worth his while. we get our fags for 28 quid for 200 and he gets free travel and food.the government and their barmy tax everything and bully everyone schemes are doing nothing but make people break the law. there will be a backlash beforew long and ill be at the ront of the que.

New labour use global warming as an excuse to tax us in huge quantities via petrol.

New labour could ban smoking as they claim its bad for us, but make billions in tax, and now want more.

New labour allow thousands of fast food outlets to sell us bad food, and then blame people for being obese.

New labour created 24 hour alcohol outlets and then blame humans for alcohol abuse.

New labour create a liberalised society knowing that either

A, we’ll enjoy it, theres no problem and thank them, thus they are great.
B, we’ll enjoy it, but humans being humans we’ll abuse it, they know this is highly likely, then they step in and say, we gave you a liberal society and you failed to make it work so we’ll have to punish you.

Whilst all this is happening, they’re sitting in 10 downing street deciding which tax they can get away with next, were collectively too busy to acknoledge what they do, and at the same time, the media are showing a small percentage of alcohol users behaving badly, or a graph showing obesity levels rocketing, or lung cancer, and whilst you watch this after a hard days work eating your dinner, you believe that they must be right.

Liberalism, and especially the authoritarian version we have today, does not work.

If YOU aint carefull, you’ll wake up one day and wonder why you need to show your personal documents to a PCSO when you go shop.

If this stupid law comes in, I can see that I will be going over the channel to get mine – it would work out much cheaper!

This bloody government would be much better if it would just chill out with a pint and a fag!

IF our illustrious Government decide to impose a ‘smoking license’ on us all …. after carrying out a ”full consultation process” of course (which will support their plans) I suspect that it will go the way of the London Conjestion charge.

For those of you who don’t live in this area, the Conjestion Charge was brought in by our beloved mayor of the people (“Red” Ken Livingstone) as a way of forcing all those evil vicious motorists off the road and onto public transport.

The revenue was to be devoted 100% to improving said public transport.

The charge was ONLY £5 a day and was ONLY for travelling into an area of central London (roughly the City and the West End). Perfectly reasonable you might thing.

However, dear Ken pretty rapidly doubled the charge area to incorporate all of West London – Oh dear the original plan was only a pilot scheme but the ‘forgot’ to tell us all – and the charge suddenly went up to £8 per day.

Surprisingly little if anything was spent on improving public transport (terains & buses) and lots was spent on setting up yet another quango (Transport for London).

Now we hear that there will be yet another increase in this iniquitous charge >>>> to £25 per day for so-called ”gas guzzling vehicles”.

I have to agree with Emma in that Socialism is a total rip-off and all they really want to do is to increase our taxes by any old scheme they can think up.

In Norway you can only buy alcohol from an off licence and they are only open during work hours. Maybe they should do something like that over here for booze n fags.

    Why, what will this achieve?

The goverment want to stop the youngsters buy them i just think it would be easier to control if they had fewer outlets selling them and if they get caught selling to youngsters they could lose the licence. personly i dont care what people do if think we shouls all be left alone to do what we want as young as we dont exspect anyone else to pick the mess up :D

Forcing smokers to apply for a £10 permit to buy cigarettes could help people to quit, a government health adviser said.

Professor Julian Le Grand, chairman of Health England, said more people might stop smoking if they had to “opt in” by applying for an annual permit and paying a £10 fee.

“Some 70% of smokers actually want to stop smoking. So if you just make it that little bit more difficult for them to actually re-start or even to start in the first place, yes I think it will make a big difference,” he told BBC Radio 5 Live.

He said some people would be deterred from smoking if they had to make the effort to fill in a complicated form, get a photograph taken and pay a charge.

“It’s a little bit of a problem to actually do it, so you have got to make a conscious decision every year to opt in to being a smoker,” he added.

The proposal is one of Health England’s suggestions for preventing illness which has been sent to health minister Lord Darzi Simon Clark, of smokers’ rights group Forest, said the smoking permit proposal was outrageous.

“We are becoming not just a nanny state but a bully state,” he said.

“Smokers already face record levels of taxation and this would be another financial hit on them. Tobacco is a perfectly legal product.

“There are a whole host of things out there that are potentially dangerous. If smokers are targeted in this way, it’s a very short step to slapping a similar charge on anyone who wants to buy alcohol or any other product ministers don’t approve of.”

    £10?

    It should be £10,000,000.

Smokers belong in prison with the rest of the paedophiles and rapists!

    Blimey!! Thats a bit harsh.

    Why is it?

Smokers murder small children everyday with their second hand smoke.

Making a child die a long, painful lingering death of cancer is just as bad as raping or molesting them in my opinion.

Smokers should be in prison where they belong. If they smoke, atleast they’ll only be killing other prisoners. (People in prison deserve to die anyway so that doesn’t bother be)

Glad Bobby’s girl agrees with me. All smokers should go to prison.

    3 months should suffice.
