British Rail still exists and it still belongs to the government! When rail services were privatised and the infrastructure passed to Railtrack, which is now Network Rail, British Rail retained a lot of disused railway facilities, including some closed lines.

It is now known as BRB (residuary) Ltd, a company wholly owned by the government.
Their website includes a long list of the property and land still owned by ‘British Rail’.
BRB is active in protecting some of the routes it owns for future re-opening.

It might be worth contacting them to see if they have any sandwiches left.

What I liked about British Rail was when I was told I’d have to book a seat in The First Class section as there were apparantly no seats left in the standard section, and the young g ay trolley assistant had to call me sir. Now that was well worth the extra bit of cash!

In a way, British Rail as it now exists is the perfect fruition of the Beeching plan! A nationalised railway company that only owns disused railways and properties and runs no trains!
