The UK wants a 200 mile territorial waters zone around Ascention Island. Rule Britannia, Britannia rules……….well…..what, exactly!!! :P
27 August, 2008 at 5:40 pm #366818200 miles around ascension- that will please the penguins then
27 August, 2008 at 7:41 pm #366819Sounds as useful as the falklands
29 August, 2008 at 2:23 pm #366820Some of the richest oil reserves in the world are THOUGHT to lie under the seabed around the Falklands. Companies have been prospecting there for years. But the sea is much deeper than in other areas where offshore oil is drilled, so the technical difficulties of extracting any oil that might be found would need to be overcome.
Whether possible oil reserves is anything to do with the propersed Ascension Island limit, I have no idea.

we colonised the falklands. we have no right to claim it, and we have no right to be there. the place would not be of any importance if there wasnt the hype about there being vast oil reserves there abouts. maggie hatcher rushed to save the falklands because it saved her political career, not only was she due to be dumped by her parliamentary enemies, but she was way past being able to fight the next election. [as brown is now] the war was a farce and was engineered to save her neck. and why are we in the iraqui situation ? oil oil and more oil.
i wonder how long it will be before the yanks just cruise in and we give them the falklands just so they can look after the people of course. and just in case the argentinians dare claim the islands back from those who stole it from them in the first place. [that will be britain then]
where theres oil, theres brass. where theres brass there are suits. and where there are suits there is corruption.1 September, 2008 at 11:49 am #366822so who has the right to colonise it then

Everybody colonised somewhere. We got to the Falklands first. They were part of the British Empire before Argentina even existed as a state. Argenita lays claim to the Falklands although hardly any Argentinians have ever lived there except during the brief occupation in 1982. Chile also lays claim to the Falklands, although it’s a dormant claim.
We in Britain still live under Norman rule, is it not time that we should be reasserting our Saxon/Viking/Dane/Roman/Celtic roots? Oops – I forgot – they were all invaders too. Anyway the Normans were Vikings who’d conqurered Northern France a few centuries before 1066, sort of!

the biggest empire !
“In the second city of the Empire
Mother Glasgow watches all her weans
Trying hard to feed her little starlings
Unconsciously she clips their little wingsMother Glasgow’s succour is perpetual
Nestling the Billy and the Tim
I dreamt I took a dander with St. Mungo
To try to catch a fish that couldnay swimVerse 2 as above
Among the flightless birds and sightless starlings
Father Glasgow knows his starlings well
He wont make his own way up to heaven
By waltzing all his charges in to hellMother Glasgow’s succour is perpetual
Nestling the Billy and the Tim
I dreamt I took a dander with St. Mungo
To try to catch a fish that couldnay swimAnd the tree
And the fish
And the bird
And the bell…Let Glasgow Flourish!”

OK, but only if you take Brown, Darling etc. etc. back north of the border!!
Anyway, Glasgow is now Scotland’s second city! I know it’s bigger than Edinburgh, but Edinburgh is the capital!
