The singer Morrissey has lashed out saying the blustering jingoism of the Olympic Games can be compared to the atmosphere of Hitler’s Germany in 1939.
Hmmmm strong words maybe its sour grapes because he wasn’t asked to be part of the opening ceremony which apparently he was also annoyed about….. but is it wrong for us all to be so partisan….. have to say I love it but… does he have a point?
Or maybe Morrissey, who doesn’t even live in the UK these days, is completely out of touch with the public mood?
7 August, 2012 at 4:04 pm #506697What’s wrong with being patriotic for once and for celebrating our successes? It’s lifting all the doom and gloom, people are feeling positive for a while, let’s make the most of it for heaven’s sake!
If he wants to be miserable that’s up to him but I don’t see why the rest of us should join him.

Although in my opinion some of them are quite valid in themselves.. Despite the somewhat extreme manner they are asserted. A manner I’m not altogether enamoured with btw.
To be honest I actually disagree with a fair deal of Morrissey’s mantra in this case. But from an intellectual and sociological angle.
NOT because of prejudicial preconceived notions of the man or (ridiculously) his eating habits.
Even if he refuses me, as a meat eater, the same courtesy.
The truth is that his are strong, anti establishment opinions that deserve proper scrutiny methinks.. And though it is tough to resist demonising such a tirade coming from a rock star’s privilged position and security, it is good and well that these words be heard, regardless of personal prejudice as to the relative merits of whoever is stating them.
Far too often we fail to distinguish the WHO from the WHAT nowadays.13 August, 2012 at 3:20 pm #506700@Sgt Pepper wrote:
