Apparently, black footballers in England are considering creating their own association called (wait for it) The Black Player’s Association.

Sorry this smacks of wanton segregation – isn’t that something Martin Luther King et al fought against, dying for the cause?

This won’t be seen as racist though but as black players seeking equality and serving and furthering their own interests in which they obviously perceive to be an institutionally racist occupation.

    Bollards!

If white players were to set up The White Associatiom of Footballers can you imagine the hoo ha?

They would be instantly classed as racist and likened to the white supremacists and segregationists of the deep south of America in the 1960s.

It should not be allowed to happen. They should stand united.

panda i agree with what you say totally……..but with all the abuse there is i can understand why this could happen

Not sure I totally agree with you. Sometimes change can only happen if a group get together and highlight injustice and proactively seek to change it.

If you followed the approach of only changing from within then many groups should not have been allowed to exist including for example many women’s groups.

The issue is whether or not the group itself starts promoting elitism and segregation based upon their chosen cause. If it is set up initially to do this or does become like that then I 100% agree it should not be allowed to continue.

I see what you’re saying but surely if black, white, brown and asian footballes had one, all encompassing association it would show a united stand?

Segregation is not the key – it is divisive and shows impressionable, young black footballers that they are racially “different.”

I suppose it could be seen as “positive segregation” but it is segregation nonetheless and IMHO, that does nothing for good race relations.

*breaks soapbox up and puts it on the fire :D

The Black Players’ Association is an organisation we should all unite against and protest about. Its supporters are racist and its ideals are totally unacceptable. We don’t agree with the BNP nor should we agree with or support this group of bigots.

    I er actually agree.

I see Ian’s point above but!

However, no group should exclude another based on race or gender (and probably various other variables as well.)

Would Theo Walcott be able to join the The Black Players’ Association?

After all, he’s like me – brown skinned with a white mother and a black father – so ironically, is Rio Ferdinand (although his involvement in this as a key player in setiing up this Association hasn’t been confirmed) so would he be allowed to join as well?

Perhaps bald footballers will set up The Association of Bald Footballers to highlight their physical differences.

I think this is bad idea for all the reasons given and many more…where will it end?

However maybe the footballers felt nothing is being done against racism within the game and decided to take a different approach? Don’t know obviously, just a thought

Compared to many other countries, England has an excellent record in tackling racism in football.

Overall, there are relatively few incidents in this country. Unfortunately, two came along at once last year involving high profile footballers.

Suarez of Liverpool was severely dealt with by the FA. John Terry was given a tap on the wrist. I think that’s what the real issue here – the fact that whenever this detestable excuse for a footballer does anything wrong, (and he has history) he always comes up smelling of roses. One day his reputation as a footballer will no longer be able to sustain him.
