I recently purchased 1GB of RAM and installed it in my pc. It only showed as 512KB of RAM.
I have since been informed that this is because I have a old motherboard. I’ve also been told that I might remedy the problem by updating my BIOS, but this could go tits up.Any advice, help would be most appreciated.

What MoBo do you have and make of ram ?, as you say Flashing a Bios can be tricky but a lot of the problems heard of comes from downloading Bios from second rate sites anything for a MoBo needs to come from the Manufacturers of your MoBo only. just try this first swap your two ram modules over then have a look in Bios to see if it still says 512MB is the ram you bought single sided or double sided if you ram is double sided it will have Chips on both side of the PCB if it is single sided they will only be on one side of the PCB, one more thing is your PC fully updated ? what is your OS, sorry its a lot of info to ask but i need the info to help.Edited at 11:23pm

Did you get your ram sorted ?19 August, 2006 at 1:54 pm #235676Oh and who did you buy the RAM from? I had had problems like you mention in the past from buying certain brands of RAM. Never had a problem with crucial.com though – fantastic service and reliability. Oh and I didn’t even get a fee for saying that!!

19 August, 2006 at 6:18 pm #235678i’ve update the bois on more than one computer.
seems to be a new trend with new mother boards
As long as you follow the intructions your mobo manufacture recomends you should have no probelms.make sure you use clean floppy disks , new ones are best and that your floppy drive is working ok before you start the flash when.
also don’t touch the machine while its flashing , shouldn’t be a problem as it doesn’t take long, useally a minute.
if the board flash doesn’t sort memory out then it could be the memory like cybercat said
also check the voltage the memory should be set to , sometimes that works.check with website first as uping the voltage can damage the memory
moral of the story is to check on the mobo website for memory compatability ,
they useally have a list of tested memory.never buy cheap budget memory , and if its going in machine with other memory .
always best to check its same make so you don’t get timing errors.hope this helped

Your present Bios is shown on your first post screen (some call pre post) the first thing you see when your PC is booted you will see Motherboard make the Ram count and Bios version, i looked at your link so look for A11G or sim i took this number from the top of the Bios list, so look for a number and match it to a number in the Bios list then you will have the latest update, this may help Here and as Liam-Wabbit says use a new Floppy and don’t touch anything when Bios is loading (The PC, Keyboard or Mouse) to download the bios follow the web site instructions you should not have any problems.20 August, 2006 at 10:25 am #235681It says AMIBIOS 12/13/2001
That still doesn’t tell me which update I need. :? -
