There has been alot of press lately about benefit cheats…
One story…this morning…Sarah Jane Smith 41 swindled the system for a staggering £42,000! She invented 10 children and claimed 2 of her healthy mites were disabled. Now how can this happen? Don’t you have to provide birth certificates or something? And as for the healthy chilren..surely you can’t just say they are disabled….aren’t doctors and such involved to provide evidence?
It’s quite alarming when you hear stories like this..no unusual by all accounts.
I have nothing against people who claim benefits…benefits should be a safety net for people temporarily out of work or in some cases when circumstances are out of our control I know some people need to be on them permanantly.
I have a customer who’s husband claims benefits because he is “depressed”…now yes I hear you say he may well be depressed……..but I have suffered from depression and yes was very good at hiding it….although I contintued day to day things I didn’t feel like going out and socialising etc….this guy hold a Chelsea season Ticket..which itself is expensive which he can obviously afford and he also goes to the matches by train every week…if he can do that he can work!
So what are your thoughts? Would you shop a cheat?

6 March, 2012 at 3:28 pm #490160Someone obviously isn’t doing their job to allow so many fraudulent claims slip through the net.
As for self employed being bogged down with taxes etc, most will cook the books,
Of course they will all also naturally deny this fact.
The only true tax payer that is being shafted are those on PAYE. They have no alternative but to pay ..like it or lump it.6 March, 2012 at 3:33 pm #490161@A.Groanup wrote:

6 March, 2012 at 3:46 pm #490162Society in general is getting hacked off with this……whether you work or you are at home and legitimately claiming help…………those that work are being squeezed so there’s no reason why benefit claimants shouldn’t be either……….sorry if I sound cold but I have been on both sides of the fence.

Isn’t this thread about benefit cheats, not benefit claimants in general?
Whether you think that claimants should be squeezed because those at work are surely depends on whether you think the ‘squeezing’ is right in the first place. Just because that’s how government priorities have gone recently doesn’t mean it’s right, or that the way it’s being done is fair or even working.

No Jen Jen I said “Most” which doesn’t mean “All”
In my experience “Most” will do a deal for cash though. :lol:6 March, 2012 at 6:19 pm #490166Hey………cooking the books is a privelage we’ve earnt for having the balls to set up our own businesess surely?????
6 March, 2012 at 7:13 pm #490167When I was a financial advisor, I used to get lots of self employed ppl wanting mortgages.
Problem is, their accounts would only show very small incomes. Even multiplying it by three or three and half would certainly not be enough to cover the amount they wanted.
They would then confess to cooking their books or getting most of their income in cash.
Much as it upset me, I couldn’t help them without proof that their £15k income was really £40k
Oh and they were benefit cheats too – claiming tax credits or working family tax credits.
