Yeah I’ve thought about that, people who are wrongly accused…. but I think if I was wrongly accused I still don’t think I would want any of my children brought up in a prison, as hard as it would be to be away from them I would want what’s best for them which I personally believe isn’t in a prison. So I totally agree with you on that Craig, someone has to suffer but it shouldn’t be the child.
Yeah I agree with you there Cass, I (if I was a pregnant woman in this situation .. lol) wouldn’t want my child brought up in a prison either to be fair.
What I mean though is, if people are under false conviction.. then it should be up to them.
Oh yes definitely, the child needs protecting.5 July, 2011 at 10:50 am #472190Although raising a child in prison is far from ideal it does seem inhuman that some mom,s may lose there child to the foster care system rather than at least be given a chance to stay with it’s mother although this has to be decided on what is best for the child. While in prison new mum’s could be educated on child care and health issues and be encouraged to cultivate parenting skills so that they can return to there community and with any luck a happy family life.

On the face of it it sounds dreadful doesn’t it… but there are good reasons to allow mothers to look after their babies in prison…. not all prisons btw only ones that can provide a suitable environment for instance open prisons.
Women are allowed to request their children to live with them if they are pregnant when they enter prison or if they have young babies…. children are not allowed to be with their mothers in prison in the UK above the age of 18 months of age.
Prisons can be a good place for both mother and baby its well know that the first months of life are critical for the emotional, intellectual and physical development of babies.
Prisons provide mothers with activities known to lead to good parenting skills in a drug free environment. Provide young mothers who may be from a chaotic lifestyle outside prison to create a positive bond with their babies and encourage confidence in their mothering skills.
The prison can also provide a one to one monitoring service, oh that baby Peter could have had that!
The alternatives to babies being taken from their mothers just dont seem viable to me, unless of course the child is placed with its father and he is capable and loving.
You do raise some good points. I didn’t think of open prisons and nor did I know the baby had to be below 18 months. I was never going to know a lot on the subject given I’d only just found out about it .. lol.
So yeah, fair dos. But if as you say the father is capable and loving.. I still say they’re better off out of prison.5 July, 2011 at 11:45 am #472192@mrs_teapot wrote:

some very good points Mrs T :)
5 July, 2011 at 12:13 pm #472193I watched this prog…and all good points but then you seem to be forgetting that these women are criminals…some violent killers..and i bet some got preg before going into prison as they get treated a little better.
I dont see why these women should get an easy life and have their children with them when they are in prison for a reason…saying that i do think there is a difference between killing someone to fraud, theft etc.
Would it be better for a child to be brought up with a killer, druggie parent in prison walls, no freedom or with a caring and loving foster family giving them the stability that they need?
When these women committed these crimes were they thinking about the children they already have that are left behind to cope with the loss of their mother??
I am a firm believer of if you do the crime you do the time.

Yeah, this has been taken into account:

Well I’m assuming they are pregnant before they enter prison so therefore they commited the crime even tho they know they are going to be a mother…. so if that doesn’t put them off being a criminal then do they deserve to have the child with them inside?
And I have to say this is a good point. At the end of the day if they went and committed the crime then they obviously didn’t think about the consequences for the baby.
Obviously like I mentioned earlier.. if they are proven to be falsely convicted then this becomes irrelevant.
Also I agree that there is a difference between murder and robbery etc. I guess that would be down to a judge to decide.5 July, 2011 at 2:04 pm #472195Its unlikely in this country if you commited a really hanus crime you would be allowed to keep your baby with you. Most the mother and baby facilities here are in low security, open or semi open prisons.
I agree if the woman was serving a high sentence it would not be advisable for her to keep the child, besides the wrench of separation when the child is 18 months old would not be beneficial to mother or baby

Do you mean heinous crimes? If so then yeah that would probably be the case in this country. You’d hope anyway.

Lol, yes MP thank you for your correction, actually I was just reading about babies in prisons and apparently there are a few tiny mother and baby units in some high security prisons…. so obviously they do allow mothers who have commited serious crimes to keep their children…. dunno, seems weird to me :?

Haha it’s okay, I only found out because I looked up “Hanus” as I had no idea what it meant.. so I didn’t know myself!
That is very odd though! Leaving small, vulnerable children with murders etc is not good :(EDIT: Incidentally, hanus crime did actually mean something in the Urban Dictionary.. somthing about faeces and laundering
