The two-part series follows the stories of seven expectant mothers who are inmates of Indiana Women’s Prison in the US. All are desperate to get a place on the jail’s controversial wing with a nursery for prison mothers. If they’re lucky the inmates can look forward to raising their children themselves. If they’re not, they face giving up their babies 24 hours after birth. With up to 60 babies born to inmates every year and just 10 spaces available, competition for a place is fierce.
Opinions please5 July, 2011 at 8:55 am #472180I’ve never been able to understand how bringing a baby up in a prison can be a good thing?

Hello cass :)
Im not sure where i stand on this one tbh suppose it depends how long they’re there for…..I do think children need a safe, loving enviroment in order to thrive….The mind boggles5 July, 2011 at 9:04 am #472182@cass_2000 wrote:

I never knew you could, until I watched Corrie last night!
But yeah, I was surprised to find out you could.. to be honest. I mean I know that obviously a baby’s rightful place is with it’s mother (and father) but surely a prison is not a good enviroment for a baby? They say babies can pick up things around them. In terms of atmosphere and emotions etc don’t they? In which case it’d be better of at home with a loving relative of some kind, whether it be a father, and aunt etc.

I’m not sure about this either tbh, I can’t imagine how horrible it must be not having your child with you but I also can’t imagine my child being brought up in a prison.

I would of thought prison would be a very dangerous place for a baby too…

Ahh yeah I didn’t realise she meant pregnant women. I though she meant women with babies already for some reason :?
Well yeah you could have reasons to say “unfit mother” and whathaveyou. However, there are cases of false conviction. Not many I’d guess, but still it’d have to be looked at in-depth.
Again I’m with you though, I’m not sure either. As both ways somebody has to suffer. But I guess it’s best the baby didn’t suffer .. and taking that into account isn’t brought up in a prison?
I duno..5 July, 2011 at 9:23 am #472186Seperation is a sadding thing but it should be done in the best interest and safety of the child
and taken into consideration how long the child is going to spend living in a prison with restrictions….The care and environment provided during infancy and preschool years influence a child’s future….The mind STILL boggles :?5 July, 2011 at 9:25 am #472187@masterplan wrote:

I duno..Yeah I’ve thought about that, people who are wrongly accused…. but I think if I was wrongly accused I still don’t think I would want any of my children brought up in a prison, as hard as it would be to be away from them I would want what’s best for them which I personally believe isn’t in a prison. So I totally agree with you on that Craig, someone has to suffer but it shouldn’t be the child.
5 July, 2011 at 10:09 am #472188On the face of it it sounds dreadful doesn’t it… but there are good reasons to allow mothers to look after their babies in prison…. not all prisons btw only ones that can provide a suitable environment for instance open prisons.
Women are allowed to request their children to live with them if they are pregnant when they enter prison or if they have young babies…. children are not allowed to be with their mothers in prison in the UK above the age of 18 months of age.
Prisons can be a good place for both mother and baby its well know that the first months of life are critical for the emotional, intellectual and physical development of babies.
Prisons provide mothers with activities known to lead to good parenting skills in a drug free environment. Provide young mothers who may be from a chaotic lifestyle outside prison to create a positive bond with their babies and encourage confidence in their mothering skills.
The prison can also provide a one to one monitoring service, oh that baby Peter could have had that!
The alternatives to babies being taken from their mothers just dont seem viable to me, unless of course the child is placed with its father and he is capable and loving.
