I mean – don’t you get p1ssed off with Americans who “do” British accents??

I dislike British and Irish “doing” forms of the whole Transatlantic mutilation of accents gig (such as “upspeak”) more Telsbells.

I’m with you on the upspeak crap Deano. My son talks like it and it does my head in.

hell yeah upspeak and RP.. I totally talk in my own accent even more now these days as im fed up with it all.. The bemused looks i get ,almost scorn as i chose not to lose my parochialisms and accent. vernacular is part of an Identity too… oh yes !

I love ye all despite yer accents :)

As a humourous little sidetrack, here’s Irish author Joseph O’Connor (brother of Sinead) doing a clever little take on our overuse of the word “like” ..

I’m Welsh first; no matter how long I’ve lived in England I will always feel Welsh…it’s hard to explain but it’s a passion that you carry in your heart and soul and I do think it’s part of who I am as a person, much more than just a racial identity.

I’m British second, although to me that’s just a descriptive word, it’s not something I feel strongly about one way or another and doesn’t have anything to do with who or what I am.

And I’m European third, not as in part of the European Community but because Britain is a part of the continent that is Europe.

But most of all, I’m human! :D

This is an interesting debate! My mother is Polish and my father is Austrian, and I was born in the UK (as they say) – not England, not Gt Britain!

What I find interesting is that the French always ask if I am English – they never ask about UK or Gt Britain!

Seems to me it is how your parents teach/tell you as you grow up – and what you hear the most often, kinda sticks in your mind. Depending on whom I talk to is how I answer it, but I tend to say English – especially when the rugby is on!!!

Odd people feel so strongly about this. I’m happy to be called British. I was born and live in England, of English parents, so yes I am English. But if asked I will say I’m British. When people go for nationality, they can be awarded British citizenship, not English/Scots/’Welsh etc.

It doesn’t arouse strong feelings in me either way.
