according to wonky wikepedia…….
” Herpetoculture is the keeping of live reptiles or amphibians in captivity, whether as a hobby or as a commercial breeding operation. It is predominantly, but by no means exclusively, an amateur activity conducted by people with little or no formal background in herpetology or other natural sciences. It is slightly different from pet keeping in that a few of its practioners are somewhat more dispassionate towards their animals; few herpetoculturists give names to their animals, which they might dismiss as sentimental anthropomorphism. “

9 March, 2008 at 4:09 pm #316932does it count as high culture? If you put it on the top shelf?

“anthropomorphism. “
It is a common and seemingly natural tendency for humans to perceive nonhuman animals (Some chatters on JC spring to mind)
or inanimate objects as having human characteristics (even more chatters on JC spring to mind)
one which some suggest provides a window into the way in which humans perceive themselves (nice chatters on JC spring to mind)
An example of this tendency might inlcude naming cars or begging machines to work (thats me then ha ha)
I have a photocopier at work that hates me…… does that count? lol
11 March, 2008 at 6:21 pm #316938Not sure why I done this thread.
The whole thing just screams lazy Sunday afternoon at me and now I’m far too busy rushing around in ever-decreasing circles to contribute any further. Someone has to chase my tail. What the hell’s Egypt got to do with anything ? I vaguely remember having some impressively deep philosophical point to make about turtles but it all rather escapes me, and so, I wish to thank – besides my agent – all those intelligent chatters who have responded……Cath too……
I do have a few words by DH Lawrence but quite frankly you’d all be better off watching the dust settle on your sideboards.
Lizard
A lizard ran out on a rock and looked up, listening
no doubt to the sounding of the spheres.
And what a dandy fellow ! the right toss of a chin for you
And swirl of a tail !If men were as much men as lizards were lizards
they’d be worth looking at.11 March, 2008 at 6:24 pm #316939@toybulldog wrote:
