However the argument and comment was not about children dying from heart attack. If you wish to start a thread in that regard, or a general post on that, be my guest. My comment was in regard to FACEBOOK and the inherit dangers there in. Not in crossing the road, not in playing during recess, not in gym class. So if you wish to discuss twisting arguments, please look at your own examples. I posted in regard to FACE BOOK, after others had posted on the same subject.

And as i said as long as children have access to computers they will access the likes of facebook so its either ban facebook and suchlike or confiscate computers which then as i said turns it into a nanny state argument.

What can the state do ? It’s plain as day, these young people can roam just about any site out there, this one included. Just how can they stop any youth under the restricted age entering this site for instance ? THEY CAN’T ! If the deviant can’t succeed on facebook, do you think this will stop them ? It cannot be stopped, we have witnessed here the postings of what appears to be a disturbed child, what administrator here has acted on this. ? :?

Seems to be a discussion going around and around in circles. If adults on this very thread have said, they have encountered difficult/dangerous/unwanted situations with Face book, then it is obvious minors will do the same. Rather than turning to the Nanny state, perhaps it is time for parents to take the reins (again) and use a decent parental lock or block for pages that are eighteen plus, or settings, that they do not want there children accessing, with out there knowledge. Yes those of you who sceam, children have rights, they do, and a parent has responsibility to keep said child (a) alive and (b) out of harms way.

So thus take control of the situation, not relying on the state, school, courts to do the parenting, for them.

I don’t have facebook so I know very little about it and to be quite honest after hearing the horror stories I don’t think I’m missing out on much………I understand that if used correctly it is a great tool …………why are children using this site? I thought it was 18 and over?

I agree, its not the responsibility of the state, but of the parent to ensure their kids are safe as much as possible, children should have no more rights than what a responsible adult chooses to give them at a given time, beyond the obvious, fed cleaned and clothed and good environment to grow in, that is enough rights for children, a legal and moral right to be a child and the constraints that come with being said child…deciding what they do and access is not a right, they are children they should do as they are told, and you cant blame facebook as much as i dislike the place.

I understand what Searing is saying and I agree. He was merely saying all this came about because the 2 individuals had facebook accounts, that is all. We don’t know the story. You do have to be 18 to use facebook. I havn’t got an account I’m not very computer savvy and really would get bored of learning how to use the site, but my boys do. One is 14. Now you may thing wtf she is letting her 14 year old have an account, how irresponsible. Fact is every single one of his mates have accounts, and no that is not an excuse. The owners of facebook know children use the site. They talk about school stuff alot of the time, so it’s kind of obvious! I would also like to point out that my eldest who is 27 set up his brothers account, set all the security settings and checks his account regularly. He was allowed an acount on condition that his brother knows his password. In fact both of the boys have their facebook accounts on automatic log in on all 4 computers at work and home, so we can check anything anytime on my youngests account. Every time someone wants to add my youngest, the eldest gets an alert and checks it out first. I am extremely proud of how he protects his brother.
I also agree with Poli 100%. Children have to do as they are told. End off. You do not have to give an excuse or reason if you do not want them to do somthing. Harsh but true. We are parents and have a responsibilty to guide them into adulthood, to the best of our knowledge, experience and ability.

Flaming nora, one light hearted comment in the anything you like thread by me and it turns into the evils of facebook and children’s rights!

Anyway, back to anything you like…why doesn’t cinnamon powder dissolve in hot milk? Instead it forms a scum on top…most unpalatable. Or maybe I need a new thread, anything you don’t like.

I allowed both my two to have facebook, as all their friends do. A bit like kenty’s eldest, I checked out their settings and I used to (now they both over 18) get an alert if either one of them got an invite which was accepted. Quite relieved now cos they both had well over 200 peeps on! lol I also made sure I had access to their home, just in case.

Personally, I think it is a very dangerous site if you don’t know what you are doing, bit like me at first, I learnt the hard way!

I would like to point out though, about this site. I think the Private Messages tool is good, however, should a minor (who’s parents haven’t blocked adult sites) be in here and get a message from a paedo or wotever, it is undectable, so it is roughly the same as facebook – sorry JC, but it is true!
