From what I’ve read and I’ve looked up links besides the one’s that Emma provided, Brighton have used a legal loophole to bar Mr Keenan from even applying. The post should have been made applicable to all those that were eligible regardless of ethnic minority. It used to be the best person qualified for the job, now it seems that it’s only the person with the right ethnic background in this case. Brighton Council has to been seen to have enough people of diverse backgrounds. Colour of someones skin should not come into a job, it should be on how qualified they are. I doubt my opinion will suit, but I am of the opinion that colour, race, shouldn’t come into applying for a job. I whole heartedly agree that people have been barred in the past from jobs merely because of the colour of their skin. But this is the 21st century, aren’t we meant to have moved on from all this now, and see people as individuals, not make decisions on them purely by the colour of their skin. If Mr Keenen didn’t qualify to apply for the post because it was a work placement, then he should have been told that. He should not have been told it was due to his skin colour. This has been badly handled and Brighton Council should apologise.

press release 13 July 2006
Clarification on museum ‘job’ reports
The city council has moved to clarify the position of a man claiming he was denied the chance to apply for a job in the council’s museum service because he is white. Many national media are today covering the story, following a report in yesterday’s Brighton Argus newspaper (July 12).
The post in question is actually a temporary work experience role aimed at MA students, part of a national government-backed training programme. It is specifically aimed at giving work experience opportunities to people from ethnic minorities, who are under-represented in the museums profession.
While people from ethnic minorities make up eight per cent of the UK population, they account for just 2.49 per cent of museum workers.Without the government scheme, the role in Brighton would not exist.
Many similar posts with the same recruitment criteria are being created nationally under the Museum, Libraries and Archive Council’s Renaissance programme. These include Tyne & Wear, Sheffield, Exeter, London and Warwickshire.
Such ‘positive action’ in recruitment is legal and commonplace since legislation allowing it was passed 30 years ago. It can be used where ethnic minorities are under-represented in a professional area.

Now, this is positively my last post on this topic but here (for those who are unable or unwilling to consider any alternative to sensationalist media headlines or BNP website) is the official council press release. I am not saying they are right and I am not saying they are wrong. I am still not interested. I am merely reminding people that there could be all sorts of legitimate reasons for the council’s policy – as indeed you will find here that the post wouldn’t exist at all were it not specifically funded for ethnic applicants. So, no use encouraging people to send snottogram emails to the council, is there? (unless there is a scheme to employ ethnic minorities to answer emails – if that’s the case go ahead). The council’s Equal Opportunities statement is also on their website which includes extracts from a report condemning the council for ‘institutionalised racism’ and demanding ‘urgent action’ to redress the situation. One temporary method of URGENTLY addressing the situation, of course, is to positively recruit from the ethnic minorities (as the Police, Armed Forces and other ‘institutions’ have been doing for years). So there you go; you now have more information upon which to judge the subject. Can’t be bad eh?
Judging by what James posted then clearly everything emma said was wrong. It was a bogus story that she took at face value. Her information was wrong and her comments were wrong. The same goes for Tory Girl. There was never any “job” it was only a temporary work experience placement for MA students. With that in mind, nobody is being prevented from applying for a job as a museum assistant.
21 July, 2006 at 11:37 am #231441The museum said that applications for the £9,000-a-year post were only open to those of African, Afro-Caribbean, Asian or Chinese descent. As the job is a training job it is legal to bar applicants from certain ethnic backgrounds to encourage applicants from under-represented ethnic groups.
Regardless of the job description, whether it was a placement or not, I agree with Emma!! If he wasn’t a MA student then fine, he wouldnt be applicable for the post. Thats fair and reasonable, but to be barred because of the colour of his skin? You think thats acceptable?
21 July, 2006 at 9:21 pm #231442Is it accpetable to bar someone because of the colour of their skin? Not for one minute should it be, any colour, any skin- you can advise where characteristics may be applicable (i.e. social worker in a chinese community, able to speak Mandarin essential, will probably exclude almost all non chinese), make preferences etc but to BAR someone is wrong
What I find laughable is Emma’s attempt to take a valid debating issue (which this is) and turn into something more sinister- words like “indigenous second class citizens” (I will assume she means “white” though of course all colours, creeds etc born here are “indigenous” although Emma refuses to accept that), “anti white racism” and “humiliation” etc
As for Magoo’s point- I don’t believe anyone on here is out to prove anything about Emma. she does that well enough on here own
22 July, 2006 at 10:34 am #231443There is nothing preventing anybody of any race from applying for a position as a museum assistant in Brighton. If they want a work experience placement then there is but, even then, race alone isn’t the deciding factor the applicant needs to be studying for an MA. So the true nature of the story is fundamentally different from how it was originally portrayed. Rather than racial discrimination towards white job-applicants, what is really happening is a scheme of work experience placements to encourage non-white applicants to apply for jobs in a particular sector. Work experience is not the same as a proper job.
I don’t even see how it’s a matter for debate that emma was wrong. Everything she said was inaccurate therefore she was wrong. The story was bogus because it was not true. I’m not saying emma made the story up but clearly the facts of the story were not true and therefore her opinions were invalid because they were based on facts that didn’t really exist. How can anyone seriously say she wasn’t wrong when nothing she said was accurate? I worry about the people here sometimes. What are you people on?
22 July, 2006 at 2:08 pm #231444Emma posted a case that has appeared on TV. The information regarding the situation wasn’t her information. All she did was copy and paste and provide links from numerous other sources. All of which tell the same story. Whatever else Emma said, is Emma being Emma. On the otherhand you seem to know an awful lot about the post Mr A but have not yet provided any links where it clearly says this post was for a work placement etc etc, I can’t make an un-biased judgement on this when I can’t see the real facts as you call them. Provide them and I may change my stance on this.

What are you lot scared about? Why can you not accept her diverse and sometimes extreme views? We live in a democracy and all I see is people absolutely slating her… fine, but she has her views, she is entitled to them … instead of being no brainers and attacking her, give good reasons, arguments and suggestions as to why she is wrong … you are as bad as anything right or left wing for your harrassing of this person. You are just to stupid to see it.
No definition of “democracy” I know of states you have to deferentially accept someone elses point of view- a democracy gives them the right to have that point of view but that is all. No one on here has said she isn’t entitled to her point of view, but the very fact she makes her point of view public quite obviously enables those who disagree to make statements to that effect….that is a democracy
So according to you though, we should never take a contrary position to a serious thread topic- be a bit of a short thread then wouldnt it!
Topic- “The sky is green”
Posts- NIL- cos its a democracy n we cant disagree
End of topic!!

i agree with many of emmalush’s views personally Geoff, she is very un-PC and not scared to go against the grain if she feels it’s in her country’s best interest, i like that a lot

We have fought wars and many hundreds of thousands of British soldiers died to stop people like the BNP in the pastThe BNP’s LEADER’s forefathers fought against the nazis, and Nick griffin is extremely proud of that. How can the BNP be the same as those we fought?

Where in this thread do i say “indigenous second class citizens”?
No i didnt mean white. I have however said white and or English indigenous before.
When did i refuse to accept “all colours, creeds etc born here are “indigenous””?
Not giving someone a job on the basis of skin colour when your white, IS, anti-white racism. And of course, THAT is humiliation. You have such an application of incitement to hatred about your mind.

“An application of incitement to hatred about your mind” doesn’t make sense
I am white and I am not humiliated by the events in Brighton- you mean spasmodic humiliation not total humiliation then.
I stand corrected…you state “no longer second class citizens”…therefore we are worse than second class citizens? However it is nice to see you accept that all British inhabitants are “indigenous” and all have the same right to live and thrive here. At last you see sense!
You do seem confused though when you clarify “indigenous” with the phrase “anti-white racism”- ergo implying the connection- simple really my dear Watson
