Well, 2008 has claimed the life of yet another bright light from the world of film :( .
Anthony Minghella was a brilliant director, or to put it in his own words “storyteller turned director”. In many ways his work demonstrates this.. from the sprawling, epic passion of The English Patient (for which he won an Oscar) to the Hitchcockian subterfuge of The Talented Mr. Ripley (one of my personal faves).
Starting out writing / directing television greats such as Inspector Morse, he was never restrictive or elitist as many laudable directors tend to be. This Easter weekend sees the airing on BBC of what has turned out to be his final project, an adaptation of the best-selling The NO.1 Ladies Detective Agency book series.
Other works include the brilliant, bitter sweet Truly Madly Deeply (a fave of our own mims here if I’m not mistaken?) and the unfairly savaged Cold Mountain, a great movie that I feel history will be kind to.
His work on the groundbreaking Beckett On Film was truly inspiring, bringing dear old Sam’s complex craziness Play into the film arena.
For those brave enough, the whole 16mins of this can be seen in two parts Here and Here.
(it’s a bit mental  )A hugely gifted film maker.. A great loss.

18 March, 2008 at 10:14 pm #318579Apparantly he suffered a heomarage (spl) during an op. What was the op for does anybody know?
Sad loss to our industry, we’ve not many as good as him.

A particularly virulent form of throat cancer by all accounts Sharon.. Empire announced it Here.

I think more people would be sad at the loss of “Foggy” from Last of the Summer Wine.
But then there’s Paul Scofield who was a real giant. I find his life and career to be quite fascinating.
