I live in a town where its still possible to leave your front door wide open while you nip out to buy some shopping…. a town where you can leave your car radio in an unlocked car without somebody claiming it as theirs… and yes… believe it or not… a town where people can leave babies safely in prams outside shops while they pop in to get some last minute things on the way home. Its hard to imagine nowadays but we ALL lived in places like this not so many years ago.
One day its gonna happen though…. one day somebody is gonna shatter the lifestyles of those that live in my town by carrying out some unimaginable act.
BUT WHO IS TO BLAME WHEN IT DOES HAPPEN?
The people in the community for putting their faith in a good honest decent existence or the bas*tards thats shattered that faith and any trust they ever had in mankind?Well argued, Fasty. I agree completely!

26 August, 2007 at 11:03 am #284555The thing that jumps out at me from all the press reports of this awful shooting is that the ‘local’ community appear utterly unwilling to step up and tell the Police who they think was responsible for carrying it out.
It is inconceivable that the shooter won’t have boasted to all his little mates (in his gang???) about how he shot the boy and yet there seems to be a wall of silence surrounding the whole matter.
The local population should act with some common decency and give up the murderer in their midst.

Not only will they learn respect because there are to many kids having kids who don’t no how to respect them self’s let alone any one or any thing Else
The government are spineless the county Carnot do nowt because every think nowadays is PC
I’m 41 and iv seen this country go down the pan in a short space of time
But unless the so called police or goverment do something its going to get far worse
28 August, 2007 at 1:34 pm #284558My heart goes out to the parents of Rhys,,,,how can any of us fathom such a thing happening to our child. It’s heartbreaking.
Unfortunately yes, the police have met a wall of silence,,,,fear? of retaliation, if pple do speak up…. Especially those who also have young children the same age as Rhys, I can’t imagine it being an easy one.
What happens tho,,,when this mini gunman is found. Are the do-gooders going to come out of the woodwork and tell us all what a horrendous childhood he’s has, how he’s been deprived, unloved, unwanted etc etc etc.,,,,,,, *yawnsssss* and of course he won’t be named, being under the age of criminal responsibility!!! They may even decide to send him on holiday, to recuperate and try to get over his dreadful start in life  I think it’s high time that more power be given back to the police, less paperwork and more action. Clips round the bloody ears for the mini louts on the streets, and if the parents complain, then clip then round the bloody ear too……
I’m sorry but I grew up in the East End,,,,and believe me Fasty,,,the East End used to be like you describe where you live,,,,pple wouldn’t dare walk into someone elses house and help themselves,,,,,they’d probably have had their hands cut off!!
28 August, 2007 at 1:44 pm #284559With all the comments about the Government not doing anything ….. somebody ought to do something about it etc etc….
… do you suppose that there is some faint chance of the parents of these little hoodlums taking responsibility for their ghastly offspring?????
I make the assumption of course that yer average Liverpudlian parent knows when their under 15 year old child is out on the streets, dressed up to the nines in their hoodies and top of the range trainers.
Of course if they are too drunk or out of it on drugs to know what day it is – much less where their offspring happens to be at 10 o’clock at night, then they cannot be held responsible can they.
Yes we’d better blame the Social Workers or the Government – then we can all go back into our nice safe homes and let somebody else do something about it.

I’m not blaming the social workers,,,,,i’m just saying that the do-gooders, including them I suppose will come out of the woodwork and make all kind of excuses for him.
I do blame the government for taking the powers away from the police,,,,,,,yea theyre putting all these plastic policemen/women on the streets,,,community support officers, makes it look good, more presence,,,,,but they have no powers as such,,,,they’ve no powers of arrest,,,,,most of the ones in the area I live in get constant abuse, and nothing they can do about it……..Get rid of them,,,,,,,untie police from their paperwork, start sending these young thugs to boot camp and give them something to think about!!!
