I don’t know the reason but I feel very sad this relatively young man has died overnight after a heart attack. Maybe it was the pictures of him in his hospital bed I dont know.

Now the mystery. I guess more and more will unravel in the coming days and months

rest in peace Alexander and thoughts with Alexander’s family.

    story below:

The Russian former KGB colonel who was poisoned in Britain was moved into an intensive care unit yesterday as his condition worsened.

Litvinenko looks gaunt and prematurely aged in hospital. He is convinced he was poisoned by thallium on orders from Moscow
Pictures released from hospital showed 43-year-old Alexander Litvinenko looking emaciated and with his hair falling out. His liver is beginning to fail under the effects of thallium, a toxic heavy metal which can kill even in small doses.

A few weeks ago the exiled Mr Litvinenko was fit and healthy and ran five miles every day as part of a rigorous fitness regime. Now he is receiving 24-hour specialist nursing care as he battles against the poison he unwittingly swallowed.

The head of Scotland Yard’s anti-terrorist department has taken over the investigation as police said they were anxious to trace two Russians who Mr Litvinenko met in a London hotel on the day he became ill.

Mr Litvinenko’s friends and supporters pointed the finger of guilt at the Kremlin – a charge which, if proven, would cause a major rift in relations between Britain and President Vladimir Putin’s Russia.

As always in these matters, this is a media driven issue – the need for an ‘instant story’ with scant regard for the facts.

APPARENTLY he was poisoned. Initially it was DEFINITELY Thallium – it must be true because the media said so. Then it was redioactive Thallium – again this was the ONLY thing that could explain his symptoms …. again because the media said so. Now nobody seems to know what it was that poisoned him and suddenly the media aren’t so certain anymore.

His symptoms no longer stack up with Thallium OR radioactive Thallium poisoning – but hey, why let the facts get in the way of a good story???

Initially it was the Russians, well it just had to be didn’t it? The media said so therefore it must be true and anyway they have done it before …. because the media said so.

Poison was DEFINATELY put in his food in a Sushi bar where he had supper with a couple of mysterious characters and they MUST have poisoned him there …. because the media said so. Now it seems that he met some other Russians or whoever for breakfast in a hotel and THEY must have done it mustn’t they ….. because the media said so.

If the media stopped presenting hysterical hype and rumour as proven fact, chances are that the REAL perpetrators of this apparent crime might be caught – but hey … that doesn’t sell papers does it?

If the Russians really wanted him dead, wouldn’t it be a lot easier to simply arrange a bullet in the head and blame it on a street robbery that went wrong. Maybe an ”an overdose of drugs or similar …. either way this would have avoided all the unnecessary adverse publicity.

Nice theory – but his symptoms don’t support it. Typically nausea, vomiting and paralysis occur some 24 hours after ingestion. This guy presented with his symptoms several days after he was ALLEGEDLY poisoned and didn’t include the typical presentation of Fugu poisoning.

In any event, and given the fact that he apparently ate in a Sushi bar, this would have been amongst the first things they would have checked.

How about this for a theory:

He hated Russians (allegedly) and was part of a group that would do anything to discredit them (allegedly). Maybe the entire thing was a set up and he was sacrificed (knowingly or unknowingly) to maximise the bad publicity for the Russians?

I think its all changed again has it not? Its deffo radioactive thingy wotsits, found in him, his hotel and the fishy place he ate at.

Cath as much as it is sad, he lived the life of a real life James Bond in a way and knew he was under threat.

I think its wierd and agree with PB, if he was ordered to be killed there are quicker and less traceable ways of doing so. Whoever has done it WANTS media attention hence the method chosen.

Too quick a death PB. Wasn’t the idea to make him suffer?

Poisoning fits the modus operandi of the Russian secret service. True it’s simpler just to shoot someone but it’s also easier to get caught, especially on foreign soil. With poison you can carry out an assassination without being noticed and flee the country before anyone realizes that your victim has been poisoned, including your victim.

Personally I doubt it was a set-up by anti Putin elements because of the limited availibility of the poison polonium (so I hear) and because of the level of suffering it causes. The Russian government have been denying claims that they were involved but that’s what they always do. I remember watching a documentary where Oleg Gordievsky (another ex-KGB defector) explained that they were instructed to act with outrage and incredulity at any allegation that they were involved in any kind of cloak and dagger activity. So you can expect Putin and the FSB to say that the claims are absurd and complete nonsense.

I’m just wondering what Britain could do even if it was proved that Putin was behind this. Russia supplies fuel to parts of Europe so would the EU take any action? It’s hard to think of what the UK could do by itself that would have any significant impact.
