    “TONE” ……

Im a massive fan of mike leigh …I have watched and read ( and re-read) his screen-plays !

To this Day Alison Steadman is a fave actress of mine for her Part in the eponymous ” abigail” ! and BETTER still as Candice-Marie in ” nuts in may”

the Guy us a sheer genius !

Sorry to disagree, girls, but I thought Abigail’s Party was a poorly scripted and appallingly acted piece of kitsch first time around, and it hasn’t improved with age. Mike Leigh was and is an overrated writer, and worse – Alison Steadman has been playing variations of ‘Beverly’ in every character portrayal ever since.
Abigail’s Party makes me cringe – not in the sense of recognising the teeth-clenchingly ghastly faux-pas and suburban absurdities of the ritual social soiree – but rather, in the pantomime-dame caricatured performance of the one-trick pony Steadman. Aargh, now my day’s off to a bad start.

Beverly !! that was it ! apologies for earlier faux pas’s.
I think one of the main reasons i DID/Do like it WAS the fact it was overly “caricatured”

we have all met “beverlys” in real life and saw right through them :) I have a longing to watch it again now.will see if i can get it on catch -up later.
