I would like to say how pleased i am that Sara Payne got some recognition for her work. She tragically lost her young daughter at the hands of a murderer, its bad enough to lose a child but to not know what happened to them, thinking of them being frightened is something i cant equate. she has quietly and without fanfare or glitz n show off campaigned tirelessly.
Sara Payne has throughout held herself with dignity, composure and shown so much courage and is a remarkable lady. I have so much respect for her.
4 January, 2009 at 2:05 pm #388292I agree, she is a brave and determined woman….. but do you really think that a “Sarah’s Law” could work???
Or do you think that it’s a fine idea on principle but would rapidly be abused ???
4 January, 2009 at 3:29 pm #388293I think it,s a fine idea in principal, and you have to admire the lady for her tireless campaign, but I also think it would be abused. It’s unavoidable. You would have groups of vigilantes going around targetting anyone who looked a bit “iffy”. Any man who lived on his own would be watched carefully and singled out as a possible pervert. People would begin to panic and suspect everyone and anyone.
This explains in full exactly what “Sarahs’s Law” is.

I am somewhat torn between the two positions personally. As the father of a young daughter, I would naturally want to be aware of any threats to her well being (in the form of locally residing paedophiles for example). Being aware, I could ensure that said person dodn’t get near her.
However, I equally don’t want to see hordes of ‘vigilantes’ hounding them out of house & home and generally taking the law into their own somewhat dirty hands….. which I fear would be the case.
We have such an incident locally. A bloke was ”generally known” to be a paedophile – he looked ‘odd’; was unmarried; was middle aged; and he lived with his mother. Every so often (around once a month or so) local youths (presumably) target his house or car and throw eggs and flour at it or bricks through the windows.
I’ve no idea if he is or isn’t a paedophile. My own enquiries with the local Police (unofficially) indicate that there is no reason to suspect him of doing anything. but the rumours persist as do the attacks.
4 January, 2009 at 7:04 pm #388295I read the book that she wrote about her ordeal, it was truly heartbreaking. As for Sarah’s Law. I am in two minds, I think that parents should know how safe their children are and who is a threat to them, but do we wrap them in the proverbial cotton wool? or give them the freedom they crave as they grow older. I think everyone knows a “dodgy” looking bloke and I don’t mean the sort that sell knock-off goods from the boot of their car. Unless they do something that gives cause for concern, what right do we have to target anyone that looks a little “dodgy”. The flipside to this of course is if they actually commit a crime then fingers will inevitably point and say “I told you so”. Life is about risks and chances and dodging those bullets you hope you won’t catch. Sarah’s Law should be brought into play, but then if the information leaks into the wrong hands, who is to know the extent of the damage caused. What interests me the most is that “dodgy” joe’s going about looking like they are about to jump on anything are easily targeted. It is the judges, the lawyers, the doctors, the paedophiles in the careers that will never be caught unless they are part of a ring. Those silent types with a wife and 2.4 children who do so much for the community. They exist, abd they do this sickening crime. A job title does not a decent person always make. Remember that.

That response is what goes through most sane peoples heads Pete (including mine!). It’s not very productive. It’s the mind that has the warped thoughts. As I see it the problem is in these sicko’s heads.
I personally cannot begin to understand what goes through their sick minds.
What I do know is that they are a danger to society & more importantly our children. Very few child abusers ever stop & repeatedly offend.I don’t know what the answer is apart from warn our kids of the potential dangers, the ones that are locked up aren’t the problem. It’s the Mr or Mrs “Normal” we don’t know about, that’s the danger.
I try to bring my kids up aware that not everyone is what they seem & to tell an adult if they are worried about anything. It’s a mine field. 8-[
It’s every parents worse nightmare – I only hope to God I never have to go through what Sarah Payne or any other parent that has been there. [-o<
Edited because a typo was pointed out!
5 January, 2009 at 1:07 pm #388298Says nowt about the pointing out of typo’s :-
But onto the thread, for the cases where they are proven more or less 100% i.e DNA evidence, then a long rope, something to tie it to and a 20ft drop would suffice, for the others it should be a straight jacket and a four walled bare cell for the rest of their natural, unless the conviction was proven in the future to be wrong.
5 January, 2009 at 7:09 pm #388299The mind has the warped thoughts but imagine the torture without the equipment to put into practice those warped thoughts
5 January, 2009 at 7:57 pm #388300It doesn’t matter what else is cut off if their Oxgen supply is cut off,see what ya mean about the torture thing though.Only thing about that is though, you have to restrict them from all sorts of stuff i.e. the internet, because if they use that to satisfy their perversion then they are fuelling the need for the other sick bastads to keep opening sites to put their filth on.
And like Sarah said, yes a lot of it is in the mind and they see what they do as some sick sort of boost to their ego, like some sort of mad power trip,i dunno how many of these sickos their are,as in percentage wise of the population, but the nobless, armless and legless wonder only needs some other sick foooka to aid them, and then they can go on one of their power trips :x
