On the new Tory website is a campaign to ‘save the British pub’.
http://www.myconservatives.com/campaigns/save-great-british-pub
They have the statistic that seven pubs close every day but they don’t mention why. So they will not be repealing or even amending the smoking ban, that’s for sure. The collapse of the pub industry is safe in their hands. (No I don’t smoke, but I don’t need too to understand why pub customers stay away)
They believe government should do more to save the pubs. No. Government should do less. Less taxing, less banning, less nannying and less Nazi-like restrictions. The pubs did just fine until the Government ‘did something’. Stop doing things. You never get it right.
Just leave us alone.
4 October, 2009 at 6:16 am #418442I agree QM…they are also pushing for legislation to ban the display of cigarettes! This will also have a detramental affect on small shops who do not have enough space under the counters to store the ciggies. Shops are expected to foot the bill for the new changes. There is also the concern of the constant bending down to actually get the ciggies. The security aspect of a shopkeeper having to take their eyes off customers who may like the five finger discount while u are rummaging around behind your counter. There are loads of cusotmers who like to look at prices and smoke according to the latest offer or cheap ciggie. This will cause me to have major punch ups because i dont have the patience to keep telling individual prices  . Then our poor backs! I’m not workshy but bending down for every other customer who buys ciggies is not going to be easy! This new legislation has not proven to cut down smoking in youngsters in the very few countries who have already implimented the changes. If the little shytes are going to smoke they are going to smoke! Hiding ciggies won’t stop that. Adult actually buy ciggies when kids ask them to if you refuse the sale. Looking at ciggies does not make you want a fag! I stand for hours and hours infront of a cigarette gantry and dont think……….omg i just have to have a smoke!
4 October, 2009 at 10:14 pm #418443Pubs were closing down long before the smoking ban came in. And the recession has seen off a good many pubs too.
My guess is that a lot of pub trade has been lost to people drinking at home while watching TV, or increasingly spending time on the net. We’ve heard very little about the extent of the collapse in real-world social activity caused by more and more people becoming addicted to Facebook, MSN, World of Warcraft and other online pursuits.
Cyberdating and cybersex is probably a whole lot more fun than propping up the bar listening to some guy droning on about football or something! (Not that I do cybersex and people get the negative vibes from me the instant they start talking about football!)
5 October, 2009 at 9:39 am #418444Maybe the way forward here is a typically British compromise. How about mixing up cybersex, watching the TV with a beer (or whatever drink) in hand and droning on about football.
What if pubs were to have a bit of a ‘makeover’???
Bars to be fitted out with internet connected computers lined up in front of the beer pumps. All customers could sign in on arrival and order their preferred drink over the internet (and pay by credit card of course) – the barman would deliver the drink to the ‘customer’s’ position – meanwhile they could ‘chat’ amongst themselves about football etc.
Of course cybersex might be slightly difficult in a public bar, but for a small surcharge, privacy curtains could be arranged.
Maybe future politicians might care to re-think their strategies along these lines.
5 October, 2009 at 11:01 am #418445I totally agree with you Kenty.
It’s a hard enough job as kenty says, having to have eyes everywhere cos of the theiving lil gits who’ll snatch anything if you take your eyes off them for a second, the constant bending, having to explain to customers what you have and don’t have and the prices. All this isn’t going to stop people smoking, people make a choice to smoke, and the last time I checked, we live in a free country with free speech, or so I thought
As for the pubs closing down, there have been a lot of pubs closing in this area, not only due to the recession, but also that people who liked to have a smoke with their pint, or glass of wine, are no longer allowed to but are ostracised and have to stand outside like some kind of leper. Everywhere you go now, you see these signs, ‘smoking is not allowed in this building’. Why then!! are they still allowed to have a ‘smoking room’ in the house of commons!!! another set of one rule for us and a totally different one for them
