The room was dark, cold and damp. It was more like a prison then a room, but it was after all a small cottage and her room.
From the first moment that Mary had woke, she was in a hot sweat, her dreams had been troubled by something she did not know and it scared her. Everything was quiet. Too quiet, but then everyone was probably out somewhere, but still, Mary couldn’t shake the feeling something wasn’t right, the way that the breeze usually rushed across her face, like scurrying moths was now at such a frenzy, that is was whispering in her ear about danger and murder.
Mary was a beautiful girl of 16, with long black wavy hair, her eyes were of a pale for get me not blue’s, her skin was a golden colour in the sun and a silver in the reflection of the moon light.
Because this was the medieval times, she was a rare beauty, with siblings that were just as beautiful as she.
As Mary was lying in her bed, she still sensed something was very wrong. Little did she know that out of her whole village she was the only survivor from a terrible massacre. In that one night she had lost everything, her family, friends, even her life!
A dark figure stole across the shadows of the night, as he came across a very quiet village, a little smile played on the tips of his mouth, and he knew everything. There was also a sense of danger but he couldn’t detect from what, he knew everyone was dead, but he was just here to check out that the fact was true, although he was still uneasy about it.
As Mary was wondering around her family’s cottage, she soon discovered to her horror what she had been feeling uneasy about. She saw the bodies of her dear family, he mother, father, brothers and sister’s bodies just littered across the floor. Like they had been blown apart by some strong force. Mary felt as if someone had just stuck a massive ball down her throat as she couldn’t scream or even cry, she just looked around her at the sight, not wanting to believe just seeing. When she finally found her voice, she just cried the tears spilling out of her eyes. Still in shock, she wanted to see if any of her family might still be alive. Even though it was highly unlikely as the amount of blood that was on the floor. Going through all of the bodies, she gently pushed them; to see if any reacted, only one did her sister Elaine.
“Mary…” Elaine managed a weak gasp of Mary’s name.
“Elaine.” Mary didn’t know what to say, she knew that Elaine was nearly dead, even though it grieved her much, she did not let Elaine see her weep so she kept strong, but just until Elaine managed to get the words out.
“Run, make a new live for yourself, forget, don’t believe the stories.” Elaine said then silently died while Mary looked on confused about the words, Elaine had said.
Stumbling from the tears that filled her eyes she looked back just that once about to step outside, when she saw everyone else. Dead. Everyone was dead. At that moment not being able to hold on any longer she let a loud scream that would have pierced the hearts of many, if anyone had been alive to hear it, except the dark figure.
When she looked around a sudden wave of nausea over took her body that she threw up, after that, she hurriedly went back indoors and sank behind the door sobbing. She was still faint with nausea and had nearly fainted. Just thinking about the bodies made her shiver and full of nausea again, the missing limbs, heads missing with brains spilling out of them and the intestines spilling from people’s stomach’s, and then there was the smell, the smell of rotting bodies from the hot sun.
Mary went back to her own dead family, pondering on the last words from Elaine, which would turn into huge sobs when she thought about it, even when she saw their faces, there was something almost dreamy about them, but Mary soon forgot that. She was thinking about more important matters like who was going to look after her? Where was she to go?
While Mary was thinking about all of these. The mysterious man crept up behind her; all he saw was a very distraught girl holding her parents in her lap and smelling there hair, as a kid does when they are young. Silently turning away not wanting to disturb her grief or pain, but knowing he would soon have to, before they came back.
Mary had no idea about the strange person standing in the doorway; all she saw was the bodies. The smell of her mothers perfume made her start crying again, her dads smell of the sea, as he was always exploring new lands, this had been a rare event for him to come home and it was his last. After the shock, all she could do was cry so at that moment not caring about the blood, she lay down beside them as if she were dead, hugging them and eventually fell asleep. Which was like a warm comfortable blanket, but it soon turned to nightmares.
She woke with a start, even though it was still early, she had decided she was going to take Elaine’s advice and run. As she looked around, she decided it might be one terrible nightmare, so this time she returned to her bed, but deep down she knew it wouldn’t happen, it was true and she was going to have to deal with it. This made her feel more alone then ever.
As the tall dark man came towards the cottage again, he began to get the feeling about the strange girl, that she was something special about her, slowly and almost in a cat like fashion he creped up the stairs, he seemed to flow with the wind. He wore a black cloak, with a black shirt and trousers, which helped him melt in and out of the shadows, which would of caught you off guard when he appeared before your eyes again just after melting somewhere behind you.
At the same time this tall, dark, mysterious man was gliding up the stairs, Mary was looking through each of her brother’s and sister’s room, trying to see if there was anything she could take out of memory and of use to her, while she started a new life somewhere else. First she went through her mother and father’s thing’s, she found necklaces and earrings, she found some money and clothes, she decided to take a photo of them all smiling. She then searched her brother’s and sister’s rooms. When she heard the footsteps.
At first she didn’t hear a thing, but suddenly there was a creak at the stairs, the wind had a different sound do it as well. There seemed to be no sound even with the wind, which had turned into a pleasant breeze. The air was also alive with sparking energy, which was so bright it seemed to light the whole house up, and gave Mary hope that she would get out of here alive.
Then waiting for him to come into the room she spoke in a soft strong voice with not a hint of nervousness as she sensed no danger but still mistrusted this intruder greatly. “Who are you? And what are you doing here?” To her great surprise he replied in a mocking but a voice that could stop the hearts of anything. “What I ham is of no importance, what I’m doing here is you!”
“Me?” Mary was shocked for she did not know what a strange man could want with her. For awhile they just stared studying each other, after a few minutes of the eerie silence Mary started to feel uneasy, but then everything at that moment disturbed her.
Looking over, the mans shoulder, she saw something move, it was not human. Then suddenly she realised it was a wolf, she knew if there was one wolf there were more, it then suddenly clicked, that they had smelt the blood from the village.
The wolf glanced once at Mary, and then turned to leave. The wolf was like the man in many ways it was uncanny, how the wolf seemed to be able to melt in and out of the shadows, which you would not notice until it was upon you.
After about 10 minutes of what seemed to be a long and painful silence, the dark stranger all of a suddenly spoke in a soft but manly voice.
“Mary my name is Alex, there are certain things about me, I shall not yet tell you, but nearer the right time I shall tell you everything.”
Mary slightly stunned couldn’t say anything but she probably thought it was for the best anyway, as when ever she opened her mouth she said all the wrong things. Slowly getting over her shock of hearing the stranger talk to her nicely she got other her shyness, and then all the questions came tumbling out.
“What time? What things? Where are you from?” The questions just seemed to leap out at once; Mary didn’t seem to have control over them.
Afterwards Mary blushed at her rudeness, but the questions had been bursting to come out from the moment she had meet him.
It was starting to become light when he finally spoke again. “Look Mary we really have to get going now!” pausing for a moment, he sighed then spoke again, but gentler then before. “Come Mary. We have to leave”
Looking up at the voice that was offering a hand to help her get up, but something in his voice made her know that they both had to leave now! So taking his hand, he led her out of the cottage. Her life!
When they stepped out of the cottage and into the street, Mary felt the nausea come back and clutched Alex’s hand. Even thought she had only known him for a couple of minutes she felt that she had known him all her life. Sensing Mary’s distress he put his cloak around her so she couldn’t see and led her out of the village.
After about an hour of walking they stopped. This gave Mary, the perfect excuse to look and study in more detail of the strange man who had taken her away from everything she had known. Then she remembered everything that had been destroyed in that one night! Why? Was all she could ask herself Why my village? Why didn’t they kill me too?
While the questions where running around inside her head she looked at Alex and noticed he had ice clear blue eyes, with olive skin form being out in the sun, fair blonde hair, he was muscular built which meant he probably did a lot of heavy lifting work, he also looked about 17, but his boyish looks made him seem younger but if it wasn’t for his muscular build Mary would of guessed 15.
He had big hands, but they looked like something a woman could run into when she was scared or upset about something, the hands by themselves looked like they could shield the woman from the outside world. That also gave them a deadly look to that suggested if anyone tried to harm her, he could crush them in one hit. At that thought a small shudder went down her spin.
Again Alex spoke in a worried tone. “Mary you should get some rest as we have a long journey ahead of us, it shall also hold a lot of peril for the both of us.”
Looking closer at Alex, Mary noticed genuine concern in his voice and eyes.
At the words “great peril” Mary’s eyes widened and a gasp escaped her lips.
Seeing Mary’s distress Alex got up and put an unsure but comforting arm around Mary’s shoulder and gently said. “But don’t worry I shall never let anything happen to you, I swear to you I shall protect you with my life.”
Weakly Mary looked up at him and smiled weakly trying to hide her distress, but Alex saw the concern, he was starting to like the girl and he always did protect his packages, but it all came with the job, the only rule was that he was not allowed to fall in love with the packages. The only problem about Mary was she was such a stunning girl it was going to be a challenge, because if he did fall in love he would never be able to finish his job.
That night Mary and Alex slept fitfully, they had both cuddled up to each other for warmth as they hadn’t made a fire, but also for comfort, but even more strangely enough it reassured them both that they were safe.
When dawn broke over the hill tops, the sunlight stole onto the tips of Mary’s eyelids. Slowly fluttering her eyes open, it took Mary awhile to remember, what had happened the night before and that she was on a journey with a complete stranger who had taken her out of the only place she knew.
While Mary sat looking in the far distance, Alex woke up with a start and started to urgently pack what precious food and other things up. He stopped for just a moment to look down at Mary, who was still looking in the far distance day dreaming about something, he wondered what she could see, not really wanting to disturb her, knowing there would be plenty of time to grieve and other things later on. He tapped Mary on the shoulder and gently whispered that they had to get going. But when he saw the look of distraught it was almost too much for him, that he just wanted to rush to her, put his arms around her and tell her everything was ok, but a) he knew nothing was ok and b) he couldn’t do that because of the job he was on.
Then thinking stuff the rules, he gently took her into his arms and rocked her like a mother, would do with a small screaming baby. Slowly he moved away got up, and picked up two carry sacks giving one to Mary, as soon as she got it on; they started, first by going east for about 5 miles until they came to a bubbling creak.
Mary was exhausted so as soon as she saw the ice cool water of the creek, she ran with what little energy she had left, when she finally reached it, she took her outer garments off and jumped into the water.
“I wish I had some soap to wash my hair and body with.” Mary said wistfully with a sigh.
Mary looked at Alex and noticed he didn’t seem to look as dusty or grimy as she had.
“Come and join me Alex the water is great!” Mary asked as she felt uneasy him standing up their just watching her.
“No its ok I think I’ll go and look for some food instead. Don’t wander anywhere!” he replied in what sounded like a knife slashing through air, but never the less it still scared Mary.
“Yyyes ookay.” She stammered feeling rather scared of him; she had forgotten the dark side of him.
When Alex was gone, the sun seemed to return as well as the warmth did. For that once moment, Mary nearly forgot everything, as she felt at such peace with the world. Then she remembered what she was doing so far away from home, and what had happened at her village. Then all of a sudden tears spilled down her face.
From a distance Alex watched Mary cry, wanting to help her with her grieving but not knowing how, the tears that were spilling down her cheeks made her face shimmer in the sun light, which made him want to protect her even more. Knowing he couldn’t help her in anyway, he left as silently as he had watched and went to find some food.
Mary slowly climbed out, then realising she didn’t have a towel to dry herself with; she sat on her outer garments and let the sun dry her off. Mary stared up at the warm pale blue sky; she smiled as she heard the bird’s twitter in the trees, there was a slight breeze but it stopped it from being a hot muggy day.
After midday Mary started to wonder where Alex was, but she decided to wait for a couple more minutes before she started to worry and go looking for him. The sun was drying her and at the same time keeping her warm, it felt so comfortable, being able to smell the trees, flowers, grass and being able to hear the birds in the trees, which after a few minutes without meaning to, Mary fell asleep.
It was cold and eerie the silence was silent, it wasn’t the silence where there is just a bit of sound, and there was no sound. It felt as if Mary had gone deaf, slowly she got up from what she was lying on and started to walk towards the little sliver of light that was coming under from something. Taking her time trying not to trip over anything that seemed to be littered across the floor. Mary was scared as she did not know this place but it felt oddly familiar, walking towards the door seemed to take hours, when she finally opened it, she was almost to scared to open it, but curiosity got the better of her so slowly opening the door. There was a brilliant flash of light, then everything became darker but not too dark she couldn’t see just enough light to see by, where her eyes had gotten used to the darkness, she saw what had been littered all over her floor was also littered all across the new floor.
Alex had just caught the two rabbits, when he heard the high pitch scream, thinking it was just a fox he suddenly realised he recognised it, he knew he would recognise it, it was Mary! Grabbing the two rabbits he started to run to where he left Mary, when he finally got there he found her thrashing around, she was having a nightmare. So slowly and gently he shook Mary awake whilst calling her name, when she finally awoke she looked up at Alex, but because she had for that moment forgotten who he was and what she was doing here, she screamed. Alex quite shocked put his hand over her mouth and told her everything was ok. Finally Mary remembered where she was and who Alex was,18 September, 2005 at 3:49 pm #138841lol jools not yet im kinda stuck 4 ideas
