A woman will not face prosecution after her satellite navigation system told her to drive onto a railway line.
The 52-year-old, from Dorking, Surrey, was waiting at a level crossing at Norman’s Bay, near Eastbourne, East Sussex, on January 16 when the device told her to turn left.
She drove her silver Ford Fiesta onto the track at 7.30pm, blocking train services between Brighton and Hastings, a BTP spokeswoman said.
The unnamed woman was investigated for obstructing the railway and driving without due care, but police decided that pursuing a case against her would not be in the public interest.
PC Christine Holyoake said: “We have looked into the matter, and have come to the conclusion that the woman had made a bad but honest mistake.
“A prosecution is not in the public interest and the matter is now closed.”
A couple of things that sprung to mind were
1. Hands up anyone who genuinely thinks a man would have been let off so lightly?
3. Wheres 2?
2. Oh. there it is
4. Irrespective of WHY she did it, should she have got off scott free?
(PS, only 1 and 4 are actually questions lol)
1. I personally dont think so
4. No, irrespective of it being a GPS system, an 8 year old passenger directing her, an adult passenger directing her, kids playing a prank with a diversion sign or any other reason the fact remains she wasnt aware enough of her surroundings to be clased as sufficiently in control of her car. However you dress that up its driving without due care and attention at the very least
But as its pretty obvious you DONT turn left quite literally AT a crossing its also complete stupidity and possibly a cause for mental examination and possibly a retest
Considering this could have caused a major disaster and mucho death in the form of a train wreck I fail to see how this could be treated so trivially by the police and the courts
8 March, 2007 at 7:31 pm #263416I wonder …….. was she driving a Volvo by any chance?????? :-
8 March, 2007 at 9:00 pm #2634171. My hands are down.
4. No, if her car lost grip of the road, she would be to blame.
10 March, 2007 at 3:07 pm #263418I’m with Emma on this one, my hands are down too. No! I don’t think a man would have been let off so lightly, I think it’s ludicrous!!!
It’s bloody scarey enough on the roads already, without thinking that there may be this woman in front of you one day, driving down lets say the M1, when her satnav suddenly tells her to make a right turn!!! At her age i’d have thought she’d have a slight modocum of common sense
10 March, 2007 at 3:57 pm #2634191. A man would NOT have been let off so lightly. But this is because men are better drivers than women and therefore are expected to know the difference between a railway line and a road. If a man made that mistake he would have been prosecuted. As it was a woman driver everybody simply shakes their head and tuts.
4. It’s clear that this SatNav device is to blame for the mis-direction given to the poor woman driver. After all, when she has to rely on it to navigate her safely to her destination, she has a right to expect it to operate in a safe and proper manner. The fact that it gave her utterlt wrong and misleading directions is not her fault.
Indeed, the Police seem to agree with this view as they didn’t prosecute her. I’m sure that she would have a claim in damages against the manufacturer as the machine was clearly not ‘fit for it’s intended purpose”.
