My grandfather died a couple of months ago on his 92nd birthday. He had lived alone for the 21 years previous (since the death of his wife) but was completely independent… taking care of a large 3 bed roomed house with his beloved garden. He cooked, cleaned and washed for himself and needed help from nobody. One Saturday he was out in his garden picking home grown peas to prepare for the roast dinner he was planning the next day when he slightly over did it. He was taken into hospital with chest pains and while under observation… he just closed his eyes….. and never opened them again.
NOW HOW FUCKING PERFECT IS THAT!
Now you can bleat all you like Esmerelda…. but…. like Matty…. I know which way I would like to go and given the choice I am certain that all of us would choose a quick painless death… after we had lived our lives to the full…. and not spent the best part of ten years being cared for and being pushed in front of the tv for hours on end.
Nobody is saying that wheelchair bound pensioners are unhappy… far from it. But if you had maybe asked those pensioners first Esmerelda instead of just appointing yourself as their spokesperson I’m pretty damn sure they would ALL say the same.

Your quite right Fasty. That was the perfect way to go. Just close your eyes and thats it. No lying around suffering in agony for months on end in a hospital bed. When I used to do nursing, some of the old dears spent their last days/months in a terrible state. Some of them came in with pressure sores big enough to put your fist in. That is not an end I would wish on anyone. My old nan is 92 bless her. She lives in the east end and she,s says she,s gonna stick around for a few more years yet just to be bloody difficult so she can get her telegram from the Queen.

Precisely my point. Your grandfather managed to enjoy a good and active life up until the age of 92. Matty made the supposition that living to the age of 80 would be worse than death on the presumption that it would involve nothing more meaningful than watching telly. Your grandfather’s story of a fulfilling life thereafter, dispproves that assumption.
Incidentally, those aware of my own situation, will be cringing at your sweeping generalisation which suggests the simplicity: “We all would choose a quick painless death.” Some of us don’t get any choice..some of us are glad for every extra day we get to be amongst those we love, prepared to put up with any amount of pain, for the privilege.30 July, 2007 at 5:36 pm #280596matty said he hoped he died when he was 80 after living a full life rather than be stuck in a home/wheelchair ect fa 10 yrs. what sweeping generalisations did fast make causing you to rip into him with such venom and utterly childish remarks? oss said hasanyone considered death a better option than living at some point in their lives. no one mentioned debilitating or terminal illnesses……i’m confused………… :?:

First your feet then legs watching the flames heading up towards you knowing that theres nothing you can do feeling the excruciating pain or maybe Drowning bet thats a plesent way to go watching all the fishes swimming by while your lungs fill up with water knowing that those lovely fishes that have just swum by will be eating your flesh once youve sunk to the ocean floor …… :lol:30 July, 2007 at 6:23 pm #280598Hmm..venom..childish remarks? Actually..morphine was the only thing that kept me going for a long time..and yes I was on the brink of topping myself until my dose was upped even further to cope with the unbelieveable pain. But after a considerable time, the morphine caused such a build-up of toxicity in my body that I suffered acute renal failure along with septicaemia, and whilst dying in ITU underwent withdrawal symptoms that..had i the option..I would have chosen death in preference to. Hospitalised for a month in that instance..I can positively assure you, Pats, that morphine was NOT a great experience.
