I surely was, Sophia. It came at the end of a lifetime of mercenary exploits, inspired by my taking part in the raid on Zeebrugge in 1918. You have to be as tough as me to fight in Stanleyville. Tshombe said I was the scariest soldier he had ever known, apart from a Liverpool woman whose name he couldn’t remember. The mere mention of this woman sent a shiver down my spine – she was known to Tshombe as Rambo in Skirts.

Ah, yes, i remember that group well. Hello, ladies, we used to say as we passed them, because they always stood like that.
Whereas we were the real men.
The one with the porn ‘tache was Baron Rupert von Grimhausen, who had a predilection for things he should not have been getting up to. Rupe babe, I used to say to him, one day the Liverpool woman is going to get you. And she did. What a mess when we came across his badly ripped-up body in the jungle. The other two sailors just fainted when they heard the news, and headed back to mater and pater in Surbiton.
Summer is over but holding on to some lovely memories of France and the most amazing insects I found in a wooded area thought I’d have a bash around with some bits and pieces.
