The deterrant that is the death penalty in USA states clearly does not work because they still go round committing horrific crimes so I cant see it being any different here.

if its absolutely certain then yesSo the one’s that we are of certain die, but the ones were not certain of dont die.
What kind of percentage you got in mind Pete? 100 percent is death but 98 percent certain isnt death. This is silly and you havent thought it through.

sod it 50% certain – death that’ll cut down the overcrowding lol
3 May, 2008 at 10:01 pm #333233I’m all for it the only thing I would say is it has been proven that a jury is more likely not to pass a guilty verdict if they know the accused will get the death penalty.

Yeah of course we have to be 100% certain The average cost of a prison place in 2002 was £38,753 per year if were absolutely certain then lets save £38,753 i say
3 May, 2008 at 11:27 pm #333235This subject is one that has… and will be… discussed forever, and an answer will never be found. My personal view is… that the more heinous the crime the more the perpetrator should be made to suffer. Killing him/her… although not a nice thing to have to go through… is ultimately letting them off lightly. Let them live…. and induce the torment for as long as humanly possible.

4 May, 2008 at 10:49 am #333238As Ruby said.. too many people were executed and then later cleared of the crime. You can never be 100 per cent sure that someone is guilty.
Many perpetrators of serious crimes kill themselves in prison, whether because they are made to suffer more than they can stand in there, or from guilt, who knows.
Not all states in the USA have the death penalty. I don’t know what percentage of countries in the world execute criminals, but the list of those that do would make interesting reading. Do we want to be in that list?
4 May, 2008 at 11:21 am #333239I dont think it could be used in all guilty cases, unless they confess to the crime the DNA and circumstantial evidence would have to be beyond doubt. If they are proven to be absolutely guilty of murder for example, serial killers in particular should be given the lethal injection. They face life imprisonment, at our expense and no amount of therapy or rehabilitation is going to make a difference to these people – theres something not right in the head.
Anyone found guilty of rape or paedophilia should be instantly castrated – and thats just for starters
