*sigh*
I haven’t read any of the books mentioned, nor heard of them (except Girl on a Train.
Some of the books that I’ve read and stayed with me are The Other Hand by Chris Cleave. A wonderful, suspenseful book about morals, prejudice, sacrifice and love. The blurb tells you little about the book other than saying to do so would spoil the journey. I was utterly engrossed in it and found it very moving.
Sophie’s World by Jostein Gaarder is a beautiful novel about the history of philosophy. Cleverly written and very interesting.
Mister God, this is Anna by Fynn is a startling revelation about friendship. A book about philosophy and religion through the eyes of a child. This book made me sob, not just cry. It was heartbreakingly beautiful and extremely thought provoking.
And for anyone who has cats, or likes them… Cats in the Belfry by Doreen Tovey. Her tales of life with her Siamese cats. Hilarious and heart breaking in equal measure, or, The Cat that came in from the Cold by Deric Longden. Full of personality and laughs.
25 July, 2018 at 3:56 pm #1101109Sophie’s World is quite famous, a very good account of philosophy.
I don’t know of the others, but I’ll look them up.
You are a true book lover, Nem., I know.
Could I ask you, what leads you to choose particular books to read? Do you go to Amazon, ot chase up the prize winners (Booker etc), or reviews, o do you just potter about bookshops (not that there are many left these days)?
25 July, 2018 at 6:51 pm #1101110I’ll talk about you or anyone else as I wish.
Just ignore the posts!
Or ask Hugs to contact the police, or Martin to ban me from jc.
Tsk.
The universities have been churning out people who are over-educated for the jobs they have, and their bitter status-consciousness is palpable.
I don’t follow Man Booker prize winners. I read about the Lincoln novel in the NYRB, where it received a very interesting review.
Barry’s Days Without End – a sort of Civil War Brokeback Mountain – also received an interesting review in the same paper. When I looked at it, it was as beautifully written as anything Barry writes, but I decided agin. I’m reading Pierre Michon atm.
And I’ll write where and what I like.
How childish. I asked you politely to stop addressing me or discussing me. A simple request.
It would seem there is no escape … sigh. Fine do as you wish, I shall endeavor to ignore.
Thanks for the suggestions Jane xx

25 July, 2018 at 10:28 pm #1101111Not childish at all.
You start up a books thread and expect me not to post my thoughts on books I Like, or comment on books you mention. That is really weird, just as when you call me a turd and a liar, or pour scorn on my experiences in mental health! I’ve not even done anything to you – not that I’m aware of, apart form opposing you persistently on brexit.
Well, I hope you do ignore if you react in such a nasty way.
But not just you, but anyone – if you want me not to comment on a thread, or to address you – tough.
Now let’s get back to what really should interest people here – books.
25 July, 2018 at 11:48 pm #1101112This is my last post on the matter. It is childish in my opinion, I stated I started the Book thread to get away from the constant lectures over Brexit and Trump. I stopped posting on those threads. I had hoped to divert thinking and try something fresh. You immediately posted in a patronising manner ( IN MY OPINION ). I ask you to not direct any posts to me and you say, effectively , ” I will if I want to and you can’t stop me , get hugs to call the police, etc etc ” I repeat, childish. I didn’t call you a turd, I called you a patronising turd. Don’t think everyone is as stupid as you would like to believe,’ I’ve done nothing to you ? ‘ Yes you have !!. You have misquoted me in a patronising manner and got it totally wrong, and not apologised or even responded, you misquote lots of people and get the wrong end of the stick. You are happy to bleat about others but take no responsibility for your own mistakes and assumptions. You have given out information about me, nothing drastic, which I asked you to stop doing. No response. Don’t act like an innocent victim here being abused as you do with Ge, you are passively aggressive and condescending constantly and anyone who reads these boards can see it, so acting all holier than thou won’t wash in my opinion. You have continued this direct assault towards me on this thread. If you love talking about books why didn’t you just start a thread on it. Yes its a public message board, no I don’t want you banned. Yes I would like no further discussion with you. I stand by my statements and I’m pretty sure you’ve been called worse than an aggressive turd. Lastly I did not pour scorn ( only you could say that) on any dealings you have had with mental health. I was in fact pointing out that most people have to deal with people with mental health issues, either professionally or personally, or both ( IT’S VERY COMMON !!!) and they do not feel the need to try and impress others for doing so. Sorry if that point wasn’t made clear. In my opinion you are becoming the caricature of yourself you so often deny.

26 July, 2018 at 12:18 am #1101118Martin please remove this thread. although well intentioned it has become monopolised once again and any good intention removed, I take responsibility in part for responding. Someone else start a similar thread, we may actually get further. Thanks .
