“Two high-profile disasters will be making travel headlines in 2012: the 100th anniversary of the sinking of the Titanic on April 15, and the end of the world on Dec. 21 (according to some interpretations of the ancient Maya calendar, anyway.)

The former is being commemorated with everything from cruises retracing the doomed liner’s route — albeit with a much happier ending — to a flashy new waterfront development in Belfast, Northern Ireland, the city where the ship was built.
The latter is the focus of marketing efforts throughout the “Mundo Maya” — most notably Mexico, Belize, Guatemala and Honduras — aimed at convincing sun-seekers and history buffs that what pessimists dub an impending apocalypse is merely the dawn of a new era.

Toss in potential European bargains courtesy of the continent’s financially strapped PIGS (a derogatory acronym referring to Portugal, Ireland/Italy, Greece and Spain) and a slumping euro that just hit its lowest level against the dollar in 16 months, and it’s no wonder “doom and gloom” tourism might be on the upswing this year.”

Don’t think I will be booking up for any o’ these …..

As I stated at the end of the clipping….

    ( Don’t think I’ll be booking up for any o’ these … )

Particularly as the television news today showing the departure of the Titanic Memorial cruise from Southampton cost a mere £6000 per ticket…..

And that’s probably the cheaper end.

You can just see it…5th century BC, some poor bloke, let’s call him Dave, tasked with producing the calendars for future generations, slogs over the task for years and years then gets to 21-12-12 and thinks “sod it, that’s enough for now, some other poor sap can do the rest later” and goes off to the 5th century BC equivalent of the pub and never comes back to the job in hand. No one else wants the job, the post is in the Situations Vacant column for a few centuries but no takers. Then centuries later there are no Mayans and the so-called civilised people of the world decide that the end of the Mayan calenders means the end of the world…just cos no one can be arsed to pick up a pen (or write a fancy computer algorithm) to finish off what poor Dave started all those centuries ago…

    Ha ha Jen !

Despite all the warnings that the world is about to end …maybe this will answer a few questions about the calendar ….

“We have no record or knowledge that [the Maya] would think the world would come to an end” in 2012.Sandra Noble, executive director of the Foundation for the Advancement of Mesoamerican Studies, said,

“For the ancient Maya, it was a huge celebration to make it to the end of a whole cycle”, and, “The 2012 phenomenon is a complete fabrication and a chance for a lot of people to cash in”. “There will be another cycle”, said E. Wyllys Andrews V, director of the Tulane University Middle American Research Institute. “We know the Maya thought there was one before this, and that implies they were comfortable with the idea of another one after this.”Commenting on the new calendar, one archaeologist said “The ancient Maya predicted the world would continue – that 7,000 years from now, things would be exactly like this. We keep looking for endings. The Maya were looking for a guarantee that nothing would change. It’s an entirely different mindset.”

21st December is a Friday, does anyone know what time were going to die – will we have time to go to the pub after work first??

21-12-12 on 21/12/12…start early. set up a tab, you might not have to pay and you’ll be so drunk you won’t feel a thing

Note: the author of the above takes no responsibility for the bar bill if the world does not end…send it to the Mayans…
