It’s not just time, a review is long overdue. Yes, stringent controls would be needed, but it has to be better than forcing people who no longer want to go on to either continue to suffer or to travel to another country and die in an alien environment without their loved ones around them, knowing that the person who accompanied them on their trip could face prosecution on their return.

I watched a once proud and strong man diminished by cancer, his body riddled, unable to carry on. Unfortunately he got to the stage where he could not pop the tablets out of the container himself and needed help. I knew what he was asking me to do, we both knew that as much as I respected his wishes I couldn’t do it, and we both cried together at the unfairness of it. All I could keep thinking was that if he were a dog we’d be taken to court for causing unecessary suffering yet because he was human he had to suffer to the bitter end.

And yes, if I were unfortunate enough to find myself in that situation, I would go down that route, and I would want my loved ones around me.

Mrs T an jen jen i agree the law should be changed, it is cruel to see how some can suffer, and yet we put animals to sleep. I have seen some over the years that have been cruel, made even worse by the fact that they have dementia, they are unable tell you they are in pain.I am very lucky the staff we have as we all know the clients very well, so we know there facial expressions, body gestures etc.any thing out of the ordinary.I have spent 6 hours this morning in a&e with a client, there was a ms sufferer in the next cubicle, he was crying out in pain, the pain relief wasnt touching him, oral morph, then he had to wait 3 hours to be transferred to another hospital. It is a cruel world at times we all live in, and our moaning over a little ache n pain is bugger all, there is always someone worse off then us.

im sorry lancs it is a very cruel illness for anyone to have to watch someone suffer through it.It does help if families know has much as possbile about the illness, unfortunatly some families stop visiting, through guilt or ignorance, so the care staff become there family

I have worked with people who have had Dementia. It has to be the most horrific illness a person can suffer from apart from Cancer……….The number of times I asked why?……and the number of times I cried………..It was bad enough looking after someone else’s relative that had it then my Grandma I loved very much was diagnosed with it…….I truely believe that the day she died it was actually a blessing………there was relief and release.
