When young kids commit such nasty crimes they are sent to young offenders units etc for maybe 3-6 years. Some, like Jamie Bulgers killers and the 2 brothers recently found guilty have not even reached teenagehoood. How on earth can being institutionalised through teenage years for such nasty nasty children who are already commiting crimes way beyond their years ever ever become nice law abiding citizens again? They are already disfunctional, and being regimented through your teenage years will surely make them more resentful, more hate fuelled. These types of criminals need to be locked up for a lot longer, way past teenage years, if not indefinitely!
    This has always niggled me!

It seems that these children are following the example of their adult role models. And being led astray by their peers too.

There is no easy answer, but society as a whole needs to start taking responsibility. And yes Pete, I think it is a matter of returning to old fashioned values. I suspect that will be seen as a retrograde step by a lot of people though.

    by the people..for the people

what is so wrong with people governing themselves?

And… it was the ancient greeks that first thought through democracy having assemblies of people to vote on things. The romans then added to democratic process, and in the UK, democracy has always been a large part of our lives.

By a return to old fashioned values, I was referring to respect for others, decency and kindness and people who grow up with the inbuilt knowledge of what is right and what is just plain wrong.

And… this has been a democratic country for centuries. Anyone coming to live in this country knows that…… if they don’t like it there are plenty of other countries in the world that don’t have democracy. Why don’t they moved there instead?

Or to put it more bluntly…..if you don’t like it.. you can always leave :D :D
