I agree that this boy is a sick evil twisted excuse for a human being to do such things and be so blase and callous about it, but… gazlan makes a good point, what the hell did happen to this kids childhood, my son is exactly this boys age and i would be horrified to think he could even contemplate something like this, and unless a child has a serious mental health issue i dont believe any child is born a monster, children like adults have different personalities, different temperments, differing requirements, and this i think is where it can go wrong, just cos a child has a poor broken family upbringing doesnt mean the parent/s cant install moral values and decency into a child, the same as the kids from better families can ensure these same moral values are instilled, often they are not and dont for many many reasons. This boy wasnt born evil he grew up evil, so one could say well its not his fault, thats on the parents conscience (or not) the crux is he did it he is evil and deserves the strongest punishment possible, stronger than he has had, sadly the parents probably wont blame themselves, but they should it IS their fault, if they couldnt cope they should get help to cope, if that is the issue no one would help ie social services then maybe we need to look there. So yes he is to blame yes he is evil and yes he deserves more of a punishment, but gazlans right too he was allowed to turn into this monster.

27 January, 2010 at 9:08 pm #429695hmmm gazlan… this is maybe where i become a meat head too lol … i am a firm believer in discipline and punishment to fit the crime, i am one of those  parents that do believe sometimes as long as its not done in anger a smack isnt a bad thing which is akin to short sharp shock treatments, i am a firm believer in the likes of boot camps, alot of these “kids” either are lacking in disciple and moral guidance or sometimes just lack of love and affection, often the case of “rich kids” that go off the rails, they are “given things” in the material sense just not in the sense they need, and often attention seeking bad behaviour is rewarded by “buying the parents peace ” which of course is temporary and just rewarding the behaviour and so it comes around again and gets worse.
So what can we do about it ???
i honesty dont know, in my opinion children get too many rights nowadays, children were always seen but not heard, so ok that is going a bit dark ages but they need to bring back respect for elders that just isnt there anymore by many, teachers were often able to assist in guiding kids in the rights and wrong through discilpine and correction again this is virtually impossible in cases that do require a stronger correction.
Maybe justice should be harsher for both parents that children get into trouble with police as often these kind of crimes are comitted by kids with previous, social services should remove any child from a home that isnt satisfying a childs needs through either not enough love and discipline or too much of both. Maybe decent courses or training or indeed fines and sentences in some cases to these parents will shake things up and be needed before a child is returned home.. i’m really not sure of the logistics or even if that would work but something needs doing and soon. And for the record this particular lad ok so he has been damaged let down with his upbringing but he deserves a log sharp shock treatment for what he has done. It is kinda in a way to let him know its wrong feel the punishment so he can actually learn from it and not just be counselled for years and learn nothing.(which is often the way) Also i think every child comitting a crime requiring a sentence should ONLY go to a boot camp type place, but also it does have people that while instilling discipline and morals and correct behaviour can also show praise. love and affection for when they do right.27 January, 2010 at 9:13 pm #429696@tictax wrote:

It’s no different to managing people in a workplace some respond better to praise and some require firm direction to grow their abilities, every man woman and child is different.27 January, 2010 at 9:25 pm #429697Well, i dont have any idea how to stop this happening of course, i must say that the ` short sharp shock ` treatment turned many of the inmates into hate filled young men, as a result of that hatred they then progressed into further acts of crime and blatant violence….a complete failure as a society, i will also add that, the message being sent out into our country by the very people who are VOTED in by the PUBLIC is that of nothing more than self gratification, now you can decipher from that what ever you will, it is my opinion that first and foremost, we, as peers must put a complete stop to this political debauchery….. how that can be achieved is once again, another whole subject…my main concern about this great country we live in is that we must lead by example in all walks of life, including the establishment and the institutions given the task of handling people such as this child as well as the governing bodies that make so much effort to control most aspects of daily life in this country…….again i ask….what has been achieved by the borstals that beat sensless, inmates not much older than this boy….it has to be argued that mental instability MUST play a part in this behaviour…..thrash the boy…see what we read in next months papers….and the month after…….etc :!:
27 January, 2010 at 9:34 pm #429698I have to say that i’m in agreement with what I suspect lies behind GAZLAN’s post “I wonder who stole his childhood…”
I suspect that when we eventually drill down into these type of children’s backgrounds (i.e. violent rapists and so on) we will find that they have been exposed to the most terrible upbringing possible.
This isn’t to say that ALL children exposed to this sort of stuff end up that way – but I suspect that a substantial number do.
I also think that, in spite of this, they must be appropriately punished for the crimes they commit. Inevitably this will mean a lengthy period of imprisonment. If they emerge ’embittered’ and commit further crimes – then back inside they must go for an even longer period.
27 January, 2010 at 9:42 pm #429699Another point……..every prison in this country is filled or overcrowded at this point in time………….police cells are being used to house convicts….the ONLY way is to try and understand wtf is going wrong in this country…then, when the bovver boys have had their say and the dust settles……..maybe….work out how to stop it……. :?
