I think very small children need clear instructions and boundaries. Mixed messages and wavering boundaries make them insecure, and insecure children grow into insecure adults. My one cardinal rule was to keep the tough stance for the important things, and on them to never waver. My god pester power tested me to the limit though!!!! And still does!
I think that we are straying slightly from the main topic which is how to handle children who (through either nuture or nature) become a danger to themselves and to society. What do we do when children ignore the accepted rules of our society and just run amok doing exactly as they please without a care for the consequences? And I have to say that to give a teenager a small sentence because he has said he is sorry is the sign of a Judge who hasn’t worked out how to get his dog to sit and stay yet.

I agree the sentence is pathetic and so is the surroundings they end up in, so i still say boot camps are the answer, tough unyielding but also with room for help and understanding there too.
