Nurture certainly can make monsters!!! Spoiled brat type ones, and ones who lash out and become wife beaters.
But Nurture, as panda says, can also give us good people, kind caring wonderfully emotionally mature adults who contribute to society in a very good way.
Let us not forget that we are talking about a small minority.
But that minority is growing and the paper is full of sickening stories, such awful things are being done that it breaks my heart.31 January, 2010 at 1:23 pm #429761@rubyred wrote:
ok. i find as i get older the more the expression “oh they are attention defficiet” comes into play. If that was the case why did this remarkable illness not rear its ugly head when i was of school age ?? I can remember 2 guys that sat at the teachers table as they were naughty.. yet both are succesful businessmen,, one as a builder and the other a Spanish property owner/seller.
why is A>D>D a sudden new thing of the 21st century ? its given a name to bad kids that have no one at home, showing them the difference between right and wrong, and mollycoddling them. I speak from experience of a so called pal, who once took her son on a football tournament. Turns out he had 2 left feet, according to her he was the next maradonna.. he sulked THAT much she went out and bought a trophy, and pretended it was given out in error.. ” robert the REAL hero”.. he was like a horror movie child, we could not say anything in case he burst into flames. and as the jesuits say. give me the child to the age o seven and i will show ya the “man” .. suffice to say he is a spoilt brat of 27 and folks are scared of him !
I totally agree with you Ruby i think the ADD thing can be widely misused for an excuse for a little shyte that needs either physically or mentally needs more stimulation and taught right from wrong, its ok being hyper etc and im sure there are genuine serious cases, but its like an active working dog yes they need to have their needs met they need that exercise they need the attention they need and it will be more than perhaps a lapdog requires who is happy to sit on your knee all day, but they also need to know when it is time and right to just lay quietly and behave until the next time, a working dog that isnt given what it needs ie the exercise can then “hit out” possibly bite etc isnt that what alot of these so called ADD kids are doing just releasing a frustration? i think so !!
31 January, 2010 at 1:43 pm #429762Yep with ya all the way there pol. I remember my own daughter getting onto me, as my grandson was being really naughty, she said i spoke to him like a “puppy”.. lol. I tried explaining that their wee darling puppies really, and they need to learn inflection of voice for their own safety. and that NO means NO. Glad to say he grew out of it.. now if i can only get him to come to heel :) joking !!
31 January, 2010 at 1:56 pm #429763I agree with you both that ADD has become a kind of excuse for bad behaviour. And I also agree that some parents don’t discipline their children effectively. I love the idea of talking to them like puppies, when my daughter was tiny, thats what i did too!!! :) The sit and stay command doesn’t work any more although she still responds to NO if I say it forcefully enough :D

31 January, 2010 at 2:00 pm #429765lol you know what i mean though im not saying kids are dogs but the comparison i think is similar, some kids need more attention, some need more physical stimulation some need more mental stimulation, and i personally feel thats where alot of the so called ADD problems sten from their individual needs are not being met in some way or another, not always but with some.
31 January, 2010 at 2:06 pm #429766no i totally understand the comparison pol.. its true. and half the battle with the mothers of some of the kids with it,, give in, for some peace..then wonder why it backfires. This particular little shit was tested for it all, and found NOT to have it ! his mother only got him tested when she found out ya can get full disability for them !
I think i invented A.D.D actually :)/fidgets.

31 January, 2010 at 4:23 pm #429768As humans we are pack animals, as are dogs. I watch Cesar Millan “The Dog Whisperer”, and hs message is exercise, discipline and affection in that order. I think it`s a pretty good motto to live by.
ADD is a real illness, my freinds little one has it, but I do agree that a lot of people use it as an excuse not to look at themselves.
I think our youngsters are crying out for more exercise, more discipline and then more affection.
If dogs don`t get enough of these three basic needs they often develop behavourial problems, much like our children I think.31 January, 2010 at 4:28 pm #429769well i need the latter for my next trip to the supermarket with only a fake fur coat on
