One third of horses die on racecourses, while the others are destroyed as a result of training injuries, or are killed because they are no longer commercially viable.
Since 1997, 27 horses have died during the three-day Grand National meet.
There has only been one year without fatalities.Four died last year, two during the National itself. Only 11 out of 40 starters managed to finish the deliberately punishing 30 jump, four and a half mile race.
41% of the public believe the Grand National is cruel to horses.
What do you think?

5 April, 2008 at 12:44 pm #323604i dont think its cruel. its what they were bred and trained for.
5 April, 2008 at 1:20 pm #323605The horses get better treated tahn most humans its the owners living . They aint going to have the horses misstreated Acentdents happen it just is more in the light of things on a big race
Same with any racing
Its like saying should we ban boxing because its proved after years of having some one hitting ya head all the time it kills the brain
I love the races dont just have a bet on the big games i have a 50 pound bet most week though the week and night races
5 April, 2008 at 1:26 pm #323606I’d look at why it’s the National where a lot of horses get killed/put down etc. Is it more noticeable because the Grand National is hyped up and full of publicity? (Do excuse me i’m not a fan of horse racing so wouldn’t know if a lot of horses are put down due to the race all year round – not just the National as its a difficult course)
If it’s due to the course… they should make it safer. I’m aware they have in the past but if horses are still dying then something’s not right.
Is it the attraction of money? Are horse trainers/owners putting horses not geared up to jump the course in the race because of the prize fund at stake.
I believe that horses are bred to race/jump and it’s a sport which has a place in modern culture. The injuries to horses is unncecesary if at all avoidable.
5 April, 2008 at 1:42 pm #323607As long as my 40-1 chance comes in I could’nt give a sh/it.
5 April, 2008 at 2:30 pm #323608I believe it could be made safer still. They still have far too many in the starting line up.
Having spent my youth surrounded by horses I know how much they love to run and jump. Race horses are your athletes of all the horses, bred from racing blood that is so refined it would be cruel not to race them.
I too love watching the race, but feel awful when they fall, but most jump up again totally unharmed.
There are millions of races every day around the globe, youd have to ban all of them, if this were to be equal.
Plus my mum works in a bookies and may find herself out of a job, so for that and the above reasons I vote no, it should not be banned, but I really do believe changes are still possible, but due to the revenue it creates they are unlikely to.
5 April, 2008 at 2:33 pm #323609Heres one good reason it should be banned…look what its attracted
