The memory on my computer has almost reached its capacity so I have just invested in an external hardrive to be able to store things like photos and music.
The problem I am finding though is when I move a music file from my computer to my new hardrive.
When I try and play it in media player the track turns orange and tells me it cant be played because it cannot find the original source of the record. If I return the track to the original place in my computer it plays perfectly.So……. how can I move over 2500 tracks of music to my new harddrive and still be able to play them?
I dont particulary want to delete media player and reinstall it all once I have moved my music as it will take an eternity renaming and sorting my files so can anyone advise me on how to move this mass of music with the minimum of fuss… :)
20 March, 2008 at 12:17 am #318739When it can’t play the files, does it ask you to choose an application to open it with?
Or try right clicking on the file you wish to play, and click *open with* select the desired media player you with to play it with, worth a try.
Unusual thing you got going on there with it not recognising the files.20 March, 2008 at 12:19 am #318740or again right click on the file you wish to play, go to properties, then click on *change* tab, select the player you want.

20 March, 2008 at 12:28 am #318742Ok….. I get your drift….. I just moved a single track to my new hardrive and clicked on that track to play and it played just fine. But I have over 200 hours worth of music that will only be played if I specifically click on each track and inform it that it has been moved as i play it. Is there not a simpler solution? Using this method I will be here for weeks :?
20 March, 2008 at 12:31 am #318743I’m surprised it does not automatically recognise them all once you have sorted 1 track, as it should automatically recognise all that are the same format, have you tried moving more tracks over to see if they play ok?
20 March, 2008 at 12:33 am #318744Gimme 5… :)
20 March, 2008 at 12:33 am #318745it should for example recognise all mp3 tracks to play with media player once you have set 1 mp3 file to be associated with media player.
20 March, 2008 at 12:42 am #318746The track I moved from my computer to the new hardrive was from an album. I have now moved the whole album and when I clicked on another track in media player it turned orange and wouldnt recognised it.
I have now right clicked on the album in its new place and it is playing the first track. My only worry is that I will have to play all 2500 tracks before they have been recognised as “moved”. Gimme some time to play with the thing and I wil let you know in the next day or so how it goes.
Thanks for the help.. :)P.S….. The first track has now finished and it isnt playing further. My worst suspicions are being realised. I think I am going to have to click each track individually.
There must be an easier way.. :?
20 March, 2008 at 12:52 am #318747It is unusual to say the least, i have music on external drives and they play fine and im always transfering files between drives internal and external, so i dont know what you done lol.
The only other thing i can think as a maybe is that, as you have installed the player on C: it maybe only wants to auto recognise the files that are on the main C: drive, but probly unlikely.
You will probly end up having to re-install the player, or try installing another player maybe? -
