posted this elsewhere just want any advice really.

has anyone had it or know anyone who has, or has your kids had it?
my boy woke up yesterday morning with a rash both his cheeks, you cant feel it but it looks bright red and its warm to touch. it seemed to fade abit yesterday and he didnt feel unwell so i left it alone. today he woke up again with bright red cheeks. he says its itchy too. its no where else on his body at the min.
im worried he might have this as one of his teachers is pregnant and id hate to put her at risk of catching it. he’s been to school today as hes fine otherwise.
im gonna leave it again today and see what its like tomorrow before ringing the docs. i dont want them thinking im a stupid neurotic parent.
i know its not his bedding as it was changed about a week ago so its not a reaction to soap powder. its just very weird and this thought popped in my head that it MIGHT be this.

Hi Geordiebird – sadly I know exactly what this is as I had it myself in December last year.

Basically it is a highly contagious infection (caused by a virus ) that presents itself as red and sometimes sore cheeks and lips; a temperature (100-102 degress) that won’t respond to Aspirin (or Calpol for a child); red (not painful to the touch) rashes around the body; a feeling of sickness or just being ”unwell’ – but not necessarily all of these symptoms.

I actually thought I had got Meningitis as some of the symptoms (particularly the rashes and temperatures) were very similar – I’d never heard of slapped cheek disease – but my GP spotted it pretty much straight away.

There is no treatment or medication as such that you can take. Lots of bed rest and plenty of liquids etc and simply allow the body to overcome the infection and cure itself.

Apparently there are no ‘secondary’ infections (ENT or pneumonia etc) so medical intervention is not required. The disease if infectious BEFORE the symptoms appear but not after they appear. The incubation period is something like 2 weeks or so – so if you don’t have it yourself in a couple of weeks then you may well be OK.

I think that I got infected by one of the children in my daughter’s school – but who knows – anyway i was the only one in the family to have it.

I hope that this information helps you.

    What is slapped cheek syndrome?

    Question

About two years ago my son’s face swelled up and came out in a rash.

It is now happening again, but this time it is only on the left side of his face. He couldn’t see a doctor but was seen by the nurse, who said the common name for it was ‘Slap Face’. She called it by its full name but as I didn’t go with him I was unable to write it down.

Could you tell me what it is? She just said to take Calpol or paracetamol if his temperature goes up. He told me it feels numb, as if someone has punched him in the face.

    Answer

This condition has several names. The common name is ‘slapped cheek syndrome’ because the cheeks are typically red and inflamed as if the face has been slapped hard. It is also known as Fifth’s disease, or Erythema infectiosum.

It is caused by a virus called Parvovirus B19. It is an acute illness, usually with only minor upset, a low-grade fever, and sometimes aches and pains in the limbs. It is common in children, and is spread by droplet infection into the lungs. The rash on the cheeks is often followed by a rash on the arms, legs and trunk. It is a mild illness and usually does not need any special treatment, just paracetamol if the child feels unwell. It usually gets better in about 5 days.

However, if a pregnant woman gets infected, the virus can cause problems in the unborn child, and in about 10 per cent of cases in mothers in early pregnancy, the baby does not survive. So it is important that any child thought to have Slapped Cheek Syndrome does not go near any woman who is known to be in early pregnancy
