Internet users in Britain who illegally download films and music face being banned from going online, according to leaked government proposals published in The Times on Tuesday.
According to the plans, the government “will move to legislate to require internet service providers to take action on illegal file sharing” which record companies and film companies say is costing them billions of dollars (euros) in lost revenue.
The proposals were included in a Green Paper — the first step to changing a law in Britain — on the creative industries that is due to be published next week.
The Times said that the plans would involve a “three-strikes” regime — users would first receive an e-mailed warning if they were suspected of illegally downloading films or music.
They would then receive a suspension from their Internet service upon their second offence, and face a termination of their Internet contract if they were caught on a third occasion.
Big brother is trying to take over again, I can’t see ISP’s firstly going through the hassle of proving each individual case or having the time to.
Secondly imagine how much money ISP’s will lose if everyone who downloads from the internet suddenly is stopped, who is going to want to pay for a fast broadband connection when all they can do is surf?
Of course i’m sure people will come up with a way to get round ISP’s monitoring what they are downloading with something like changing file names. Instead of a movie downloading being called the name of the latest James Bond movie, just to call it “title26” for example and it would be hard to prove for any ISP that any copyrighted material had been downloaded, so there is hope still for those who would wish to continue to download.

It’s the year of comebacks for Geriatrics, a new Indiana Jones movie coming out in May with Harrison Ford in it.
12 February, 2008 at 4:01 pm #311636Ive been listening to radio 1 today, and many many people have been emailing and texting their views on this.
The main one is why should you pay to download a movie you may already own simply to put on your mp3/ipod because that is the only way the software will adapt it?
12 February, 2008 at 5:52 pm #311637Yet another thing the goverment is poking their nose into. They should be more worried about blokes getting kicked to death by teenage brats or all the shootings and knife crime theat goes on !
If the record and film companys stopped ripping us off with the prices we wouldn’t have to download stuff. Take CDWOW who were taken to court because they had the cheek to sell CD’s @ £6:99, we in “great britain”(use the term losely) have to pay £8:99 even thought the rest of the world are only paying 5 or 6 quid ffs.
We might as well cut our knackers off, stick them in a jiffy bag and post them to number 10 downing street because all they seem interested in is sqezzing them until we scream ! -
