Ive been having problems (again….. )

Right. At the bottom of my screen I have two sets of the little telly screens. One is named Local Area Connection 3 100.00mbps. The other is named Internet Connection.

When I go to control panel often only the first one is there and the second one (When it is there is called Internet gateway) often dissapears. Once Ive come out of there and re-set the modem again (after being disconnected) it often re-appears then disconnects itself again.

I never used to have two sets of tellys, and another thing I just thought of… when I try to open the properties of the gateway one I get a big warning alarm (you know the sound) and a big red cross and a message that says

“The Internet Connection Sharing Computer is not configured to let network users control or disable the shared Internet Connection. This setting can be changed on the Advanced Properties of the shared connection Internet Connection Sharing Computer”

wasss goin on?? How do I get it back to how it used to be? Im being disconnected every half hour/hour at the moment.

The spotty teenager who lives up stairs is most unhappy and is having to leave the hole that is his bedroom on more occasions than he would care to, to moan at me.

    Thankyou in advance

    Dear confused from Essex,

Follow this path: START>>> SETTINGS>>> NETWORK CONNECTIONS.

When the Network connections box opens, look for the icon representing the device that your computer uses to connect to the internet.

This will probably be located in the section marked “LAN or High Speed Connection” and the device itself may be called “Onboard Gigabit Ethernet LAN” or “Gigabit Ethernet PCI Card” or something similar >>>> then RIGHT click it.

A pop-out menu appears and you should LEFT click the bottom item called “Properties”

This will open the Properties dialogue box for your device – the first page Tab is headed “General”.

At the bottom of this page you will see two ”tick boxes” called “Show icon in notification area when connected” and “Notify me when this connection has limited or no connectivity”.

You can make one or both ”little TV’s” appear or disappear from your task bar by ticking or un-ticking these boxes.

I suspect that your internet connection is being interrupted in some way from time to time and the second box (see above) has a green tick in it thus informing you of this event.

Thanks but I knew that. I just wondered if it was unusual to have two sets there, as if there are two separate connections. I always thought there was just one LAN connection, Ive never noticed the internet gateway before.

Turn off and unplug computer, box it back up in original state, take it back to shop and tell them you are too stupid to own a pc, they will understand.
