There have been plenty of programmes on about this this week. First we have whatshisface Ive got a double barreled name farmer/chef/bloody everything guy on channel 4 about factory farming chickins for 39 days and thats the last two nights, and tonight on BBC3 there was a slaughter of a baby goat (12 weeks I think it was) and cooked and fed to the audience.
The audience consisted of a politically euro friendly balance of Butcher, chef, meat eaters and veggies.
Now, Im one of these guilty hypocritical meat eaters. I hate seeing slaughter, but love my roast and eat grilled meat most nights of the week and treat myself to the occasional burger.
But whenever I see an animal slaughtered, especially a young one on tv Im in bits! I cannot help it. It must be a maternal thing or something, I dont know.
But these baby goats at such a young age and their floppy ears really got me. Not to mention mr double barreled name’s baby chicks that only have a live span of 39 days (factory farmed).
How do you all feel about the whole thing? Should they keep the animals alive for a bit longer… even though they are destined for slaughter?
One point that interested me was the chef. He tried the young goat and said he could not serve it in a restaurant, and there was nothing wrong with lettiing it live to at least 12 months (18 months = adult = meat no good).

9 January, 2008 at 12:19 am #302504Could you kill it yourself though? I know I couldnt.

No, but I don’t have to. Nor do I have to watch it being killed. Problem solved!
9 January, 2008 at 12:30 am #302506I’ve seen human executions (not in person), autopsies, and worked in a slaughter house myself, you become immune to it all after a while.
The worst thing was slaughtering sheep, slitting there throats and hearing the high pitched like scream. I still eat meat. But easy to understand why people would not want too.
But just because you have seen the slaughtering of a animal, if you deicde to stop eating meat, if you dont stop eating every living thing with a head, its rather hypercritical.9 January, 2008 at 1:14 am #302507Thats why I find it difficult to understand. Perhaps I should not question it so much. As long as the life they live before slaughter is fine and the death itself is quick then that is fine.
But the chicken farm…. they were debatiing about the fact you have something like 20 chicks per square meter running around in their own sh/it. Then these are sold at Tescos…. two for a fiver!!
I always buy free range chicken, but it is more expensive because everybody is buying the £2.50 bird for their lunch. Even at 39 days old the expense for a farmer cannot really bring much revenue after sale. I dont know what is worse factory farmed chicken or battery hen eggs.
It is about time we treated the thing with respect. Its the most consumed thing in the land (apparantly). We should at least make sure its fed and looked after properly before we eat it?….. no wonder everybody is bloody ill.

And used to ride a horse that would not go passed the abotiors (spl)… its like they have a 6th sense to that type of thing.
I dont like the screams as you mention there, and Ive seen a guy have his throat slit proper (via mobile) and will never get over his face (or neck)!
9 January, 2008 at 1:35 am #302509Well i’m sure tomorrows episode, the “kill it, cook it, eat it” of baby cows will be just as hotly debated. I’ve seen cows slaughterd also, and it is no more pleasant to the eye than tonights viewing.
9 January, 2008 at 1:45 am #302510I shall watch it. And probably cry. Then debate it. Then get over it when Im hungry. Its a wierd world.
9 January, 2008 at 4:40 am #302511I have the same problem as you, Sharon. I went vegetarian for 2 years after seeing a cow being slaughtered.
I make sure I only buy local meat from animals that have lived a free and happy life up to the slaughter now though… but.. I still feel guilty.
