The tax system should reward married couples, a cabinet minister has said.

He did not advocate specific changes to the tax system, but said there was a “moral case” for using tax to promote the traditional family unit.

Mr Burnham, who is married with three children, said: “I don’t seek to preach to anybody. But in an abstract way I think it’s better when children are in a home where their parents are married, and I think children do notice if their parents are married or not.”

What a load of rubbish. What about the couples who have been together for years and have CHOSEN not to get married, who have bought a house together and have children? Surely thats more “commitment” than a piece of paper? Some people these days get married several times, some enter into marriage after only knowing their partner for a few months, then end up divorced less than a year later. Why should they be rewarded by the tax system? If anything, this new tax incentive will just encourage more of this, people just getting married for the sake of it

A comment like that has the potential to be political suicide

Once the gays and feminists get their teeth into the bloke he’ll have wished he’d kept his gob shut lol

This is one of those whimsical areas where the best interests of the child fall second place to peoples own dysfunctions and hedonistic excesses

My wife and i have both worked all of our married lives and we have seen no tax breaks, what the minister is saying is if the wife stays at home while the husband goes to work they will be able to claim up to a £1000 back, if my wife did no work we would be £15000 a year worse off, this is political bullshit to get lazy sods off there arses, what breaks do married couples get who are both workng, and are still under the tax bracket……..NONE

I hardly think the point is to encourage women who CAN have a career to turn into junk food eating daytime telly watching mindless no hopers really nor is it to further line the pockets of people who already have the money from two incomes

For something like this to have any value it should be aimed at women who think actually putting time and effort into running a home and being a proactive hands on parent is a worthwhile pursuit and WHY people have kids by affording them the ability to do so rather than begrudgingly HAVING to work to make ends meet or risking their relationship ending due to financial pressures which is a common reason for relationships breaking down in order to afford more kids a stable mum and dad enviroment to grow up in as theres more than enough impirical data to show this IS the best start in life for a child, better on average than only having one parent and better on average than having two parents who see them rarely because their careers, holidays, nice cars. plasma screen TV’s, new kitchens, brand name clothes etc etc etc etc are more important to them than their kids

I think that the above is one of the longest sentences I’ve ever seen on these Boards.

Just to say that to get divorced you have to be married for at least a year (no less). Most divorces come at least 2 years or more after marriage. The only way you can get a divorce before this time is on the grounds of nullity.

I think – all he is trying to point out – and he is quite correct : is that the breakdown of the family unit has lead to the mess that today’s society is in

Well said – although the people with the loudest voices – the gay rights / equal rights / human rights etc etc will diss his comments – whilst the silent majority probably agree with him

Well said drivel, in my opinion the current breakdown in moral values is directly attributable to the penchant for the lower classes to shack up willy nilly without a f**in care in the world for their poor bloody offspring whose going to be ostracized by their peers for not having a proper Mummy an Daddy…..its a national disgrace the way things are goin here, I’m almost ashamed to be british .

Well said uber i totally agree there. i had two children, stayed at home for 7 years in total but always had a part time job working around hubbys job, he made the vast majority of our income and my money paid for treats. but my mate who is single and on benefits is better off financially all round than we are.people who work as a couple should benefit but any contract has to be open to all to reflect that we have changed as a society, my sister has been with her partner for 30 years but theyre not married ?

This is exactly the point i was trying to make here, couples who have been together for such a long length of time surely deserve the same benefits as those who are married.
